now i picked up my car yesterday and it had just over half a tank of petrol in it but the gauge for some reason wont show it then all a sudden its climbing up and i get a reading and i dont know how long it will stay there but it will often go back down to empty, so does anyone know what the problem could be because i dont want to go pulling out things i dont know about

Go to an auto electrician. He can test the fuel sender from the tank and the gauge also. Or you can try to go to an instrument testing place near you. The vl dash comes out within 5 minutes and is very simple. I have owned 6 vl's over the last 14 years and they are easy to work on. You could even just buy a 2nd hand dash which you can pick up very very cheaply and that way you won't need to go to auto electrician if you then find out its your dash.
