The internal pump is a priming pump and the external supplies the high pressure. I think the external ones are a fair bit more expensive than the internal ones? They mount on an insulated bracket infront of the fuel tank and the power wires are just spliced into the ones feeding the internal pump. You may be able to modify the pickup and fit a single internal high pressure pump. The high pressure pump is a bit longer and there is a pulsator as well. If you used a standard tank pickup it may not reach the bottom of the tank.
