fuel pump?

Hi there, I have a VN wagon series 1 and have been experiencing problems with what I think is the fuel pump. I cannot start it at all at the moment, but in the last few weeks the once zippy noise of the fuel pressurising after you turn the key has turned into a low grumbling moan and as of yesterday I cannot hear anything happening. The only thing is when my partner took out some fuses and cleaned them up it was able to start but only once and then nothing again and then after it had been sitting there for a while it started again but only once again. My partner says that it could be a fuel relay problem or the fuel pump is just shagged?? We were wondering if anyone has experienced this before or knows what it is.
Thanks

Yeah had sorta the same problem...pump one day started to sound different so i had it replaced but the thing would still fire up but wouldnt push the fuel thru.....id go check the conections at the tank coz they sumtimes stuff up n giv em a flick n a shake n make sure it connected tight n see if she fires up...Id say that ur pump is dead as the noise of it firering up has changed its a common thing that happens go to any mechanic and say that ur fuel pump sounds different n car wont start they will say get a new pump.....but this is only goin from wat happened in me 88 VN

O.K. well it was definately the fuel pump as my partner has replaced the old one with a brand new one and the car goes.......kinda. When replacing the fuel pump my partner took all the fuel out of the tank and then when he finished he filled the car back up with the left over fuel but found that there was not enuf fuel in there for the new pump to pick up so we filled it up further and found that it ran fine on half a tank. Although after it fell below the 1/4 line it kept cutting out and stalling the car, where as I used to be able to drive it into the red. Is it possible that we have not got the pick up line in the right place when we replaced it?
thankyou

Yep ur pick up line is in the wrong spot if its stallin when u know there is enough fuel in there....u will have to pull ur tank out again n get the pick up line bak to where its meant to sit....its a buggar to do i passed mine of to the mechanic to do....dont know y they even put the pumps in the tank....maybe coz its takes em longer to do so they can make more money....

Obviously it varies. My VN SS has an external pump, I had a VP SS which had an internal pump. Probably different again for 6's.

Yeah we thought it would be an external pump but found it was internal, and yes it is a V6. We havent got the fuel down past half a tank again yet so dont know if it was just the new pump working the turkey thru, will find out soon enuf and will have to reposition the pick up line.
Thanks
