hell all, ive made a custom sub box to sit on the right side of the boot and i plan to bolt it down to the floor using nutserts, im just wondering how much of a gap there is between the floor of the boot and the fuel tank underneath,
im going to grind a drill down so i just passes through the sheet metal but just wanna know so i dont drill too far , oh yeah the car is an 06 SV6

pop your head under the car and you can sort of judge were the tank is and where its safe to drill holes. but from what i could see the tank sits against the floor/sheet metal

Just a hint - use electrical tape around the drill bit to make the depth on the drill eg 5mm - can stop the drill going too far when it cuts through thin metal.

I have been told of mechanics drilling engine blocks when attacking a firewall....

when drilling through solid steel cast or aluminium using elec tape as a depth guide is a good idea.
but when drilling through sheet metal using a standard drill i would not recommend,
as the drill passes through the final dag grabs the flutes and sucks the drill bit through, as i only want to pass just through the sheet this would be inpractical and possibly drill through the fuel tank.

cheers anyway but i think ill just strap the box and velcro

Why don't you unbolt the fuel tank straps, drop the fuel tank, bolt the sub box in and then re-bolt the fuel tank and straps back in ?

The best way ive found is to use a cotton reel or some thing you can use to stop the drill going to far through.
