If anyone in the group is like myself and prefers to do the work rather than get it done, I was quoted over $5000.00 to rebuild and replace the 6L80E 6 speed auto transmission in my WM Caprice 6Ltr. This prompted me to do some searching and I managed to find a GM Goodwrench, Fully re-manufactured 6L80E 6sp auto from a seller in Queensland, which was also supplied with a matching rebuilt stock stall convertor. The total price including gst and shipping to me in Melbourne was $2450.00AUD. He only has a couple left - so if anyone is in need of a 6L80E for your WM Caprice or VE Commodore - let me know and I can forward the information to make a purchase.

cheers

I thought of doing the same for my 2012 L77 Calais Wagon,
Spent a bit of time researching, and with it all said and done, and using a second hand Transmission without a warranty,
Installing it myself (with another pair of hands) It wasn't worth it.

I bit the bullet, I got my replaced for $5,500, back on the road in 2 days,
However, I did have a unusual noise on the down shift from 4th to 3rd, (within the 2,000 k/s) and took it back to him,
he could not replicate the same noise, With no questions asked, he ordered a another Transmission, and replaced it.
Back on the road again in 2 days.
With a Warranty.

Glad you got a good outcome.. I have rebuilt half a dozen 6L80E and 6L80 trans and haven't had any problems with any so far... touch wood.
I have a time crunch on getting some cars sorted properly and at a reasonable cost and sold to make space for new toys that will be on the water by Friday this week - so I have been doing the work myself and needed a spare as they all have some common faults at around +220k's and most of my rides have them fitted...

If you pay good attention to specific components when rebuilding these - they are awesome to work on and perform really well.

Like you I have a love of GM's and currently have:
1x Poison Ivy Green 2011 VE SS Series II Thunder Ute - 6L80E (modified) 6ltr (345rwkw)
1x Gunmetal 2012 VE SS Series II Thunder Ute - 6L80E - 6ltr (stock)
1x 2009 VE Series 1 SS Sportswagon, 6L80E (modified) 6ltr (290rwkw)
2x 2008 WM Caprice 6L80E (modified) - 6ltr (290rwkw)
1x 2016 VF SS Commodore 6L80E (modified) - 6.2ltr LS3 (330rwkw)
1x 1977 Chevrolet Camaro - 6L80E (modified with 2800 hi-stall) - 6ltr LS2 with Pro-Charger (584rwkw)
1x 1955 Chevrolet Belair Sedan - 283v8 with 2spd Powerglide
1x 1957 Chevrolet Station Wagon - 350v8 with 2spd Powerglide
1x 1957 Chevrolet 150 Coupe - Stroker 383v8 with 671 Supercharger - 2spd Powerglide & 2800 hi-stall

and my daily drive is a 2016 VF Commodore Evoke Series II - 3.0ltr V6 with 6spd Auto.

cheers and happy cruising..

You were spot on with the 220,000 k/m’s.
As that’s what mine had done when it started slipping in 5th & 6th, where I wasn’t surprised at that, as I was out on the road/highways/freeways in the past 9 years with the VE.
But up to then, it never missed a beat,
I purchased my L77 Calais wagon in 2013 with 17,000 k/s on it, (10 months old ex GM car) and it’s bit driven all over Victoria to every corner of that state a number of times.
And totally enjoyed driving it,
So I figured, it should last another 200,000 k/s, not that I will be doing that amount of k/s in it, but didn’t want to get stuck out BFN with a dead transmission.

Yes, I am a bit partial to Holden’s since I was 15 and working/tinkering on them, and have been learning to drive in a 1966 HD Holden sedan in 1977.
Nice collection of cars,
Rego and maintenance would cost a bit to keep them on the road, hence you wish to source the Transmissions you mentioned to keep costs down.

a bit green there hademail :p

I count 7 cars that clank probably can’t put on club reg as yet. So if they are all registered, he’s probably forking out over $5600/year. At least he’d get a discount on car insurance with so many toys… but still, a lot of maintenance just keeping them ready to drive and they’d take up so much space… Unless he’s a defacto dealer flipping cars (naughty naughty) it’s more than I‘d want to have around…

Me, I’m happy with my daily and a nice toy which I need to take out more often (but never in the wet) :p
