Exactly.
I'm not a mechanic but this **** isn't rocket science. The main part I'm looking to replace is the bloody rod journal and mains bearings. That and rings.
If you're not doing that all you're doing is taking the pistons out and putting them back.

+1 agreed
in an aged motor youll still end up with the knock and low oilpreausure eventually
if not all oil fed bearings replaced or at least check if within specification!~

Not to mention you can replace rings without at least honing the block.
How do you do that with the crank still in it?

If you pull the crank out, and linish it, you need over sized bearings. unless you want 5psi oil pressure.
How do you do that with it in the block.?? LOL

there is bags more than just that. what about line boring, resizing rods etc. you cant line bore with the crank in. and personally if im building an engine to rev, i want those holes to be perfect circles.

thats not to mention the hot tank. wonder how the bearings would go after a dip in the bath :D

Yeah exactly, my point was you can't even do a basic rebuild without doing it.

Just screams HERPA DERP.

which is why (and getting further off topic but back on topic for another thread) when OP said "i will just stick some flat tops in it, i replied "you will be unpleasantly suprised at how much it will cost"

it seems like an easy task, but when you add up all the macine work involved, its kinda not worth it. stick an extra grand in the mix and get yourself a 355. i didnt go that route cos' i still want to extract as much HP from my original 308 as i can. its a personal race against physics and currently i am losing.

good choice i agree entirely

the worst thing a mechanic can EVER do is not do the whole job and HOPE it will last

those particular mechanics are the ones i let go..... or GET let go i should say~!
