Since fitting a 5sp (M76) to my vk it has been very whiny, at first it was unbearable but has slowly gotten better the more i have driven it. I would just like to know anyones other experience with this gearbox when it comes to noise ( other than the sweet sound of one breaking when you dump the clutch when its behind a worked 202). I have done about 3000km since fitting it and has gotten any quieter for a about 1000km, so im guessing its just a whiny box.

I also tried some of that Nulon G70 stuff, didnt really improve the whine but made the shift much nicer.

Usually the M76 makes a bang noise followed by crunching noises.

Have you done any work on the box, bearings etc???
What oil are you running in the box?

cheers
Scott

Im using Castrol VMX80, the owners manual suggests SAE80w, i have pulled the gearbox apart and inspected it before i fitted it. All the gears looked good with no marks or scoring, bearings looked reasonably new and so did the syncro rings. Does have a bearing noise at idle when you let the clutch out in neutral which i was a bit disappointed with but its not very bad, sort off sounds like a dry bearing though. Seemed to have been pulled apart before i did. It was out of a car at my local wreckers, it had 120 000 km on it but i didnt check if it was its original box on the CP.
Thanks in advance.

Well I just went to Sydney and on the drive home a bearing has decided to fail, luckily it was a countershaft bearing so fourth still worked ok so it made it home on its last legs. Should have replaced them in the first place but anyway.

Just letting you all know so you dont do what i did :D
