Have a 1997 vs ute. 7hdd gearbox

Have a 6hdd gearbox out of a 96 vs wagon

Dropped the 7hdd gearbox out today and put the 6hdd in
before the 6hdd gearbox went in it wouldnt rev over 2000rpm
Would barely go forward, neutral was forward too and wouldn't go backwards at all
So I swapped them
now it revs over 2000rpm but won't go into any gears

first time ive done a gearbox change
Not even sure if the 6hdd out of a 96 wagon can go into a 97 model vs ute

Swapping 7hdd with a 6hdd should be fine.

Used your old or did the new box come with a torque convertor already fitted ?
Does the trans fluid level change with the engine running ?
I am suspecting your new tranny oil pump has failed if the torque convertor has been incorrectly fitted.
