So a few weeks ago i got the VE bogged in a very slushy grassy paddock. Didn't realise it more closely resembled a rice paddy underfoot than your average paddock until i was half way through a U turn, when the traction control started to kick in and the car pretty much sank about 2 inches.
What can one do to get themselves unbogged from a situation like this ? Luckily a mate was close by with a Patrol equiped with a nice Winch so it was all resolved without too much trouble. If he hadn't been there what could i have done ? Someone jokingly suggested snow chains. That's about the best thing i can think of, besides carrying a snatchem strap in the boot to hook onto someone elses towbar, or just staying on the road perhaps LOL.
Would an LSD have helped ?

I don't know how to answer this.. I don't know of many people using commodores as 4wd's. Well.. Sober anyways.

Buy some Muddys for your car! ;)

I was just doing a u turn as the driveway was narrow and i needed to turn round and go to a wedding .... this type of thing ALWAYS happens when you have somewhere important to go.

An LSD would have helped. You could drive both wheels rather than just the one without traction.

In future if you turn tc off and pull the handbrake on you can apply force to both wheels and get them both to drive helping you get yourself unstuck.

I've had this problem twice in the same car, once 253 auto, once 202 man, I buggered the manual, bit got it out, bogged to the sills 2 years ago and still got dirt coming out of the chassis, rock yourself in 1st and reverse, eventually you'll get enough run up to get out, I put a cyclone fence and some roof tiles under the back Tyres, the next time it was just slippery on a hill, went for a uturn and took about 50 metres to finally turn around just missing a water tap, had two work mates trying to push as well, no good, I poured cornice cement around the tires in the hope it would harden and give me enough grip, eventually worked

Does that really make both wheels work on a single spinner, how hard do you need the handbrake on?

You can buy plenty of rice at woolies, there's no need to drive into the middle of a rice paddy.

Small amount of gas and pull it up slowly til the one stops spinning. It'll work if your a little stuck and digging yourself a hole.

The open diff lights one up because the torque required to drive that wheel is near zero. By applying a torque to that wheel you can end up having the torque to drive the two rear wheels not differing by as much (percentage) so it'll drive both wheels.

I've used the handbrake trick in older Holdens years ago, (When I was younger and used to drive in some 'unusual' places...) But I havn't had to try it in anything VS onwards, (must stay on the road nowadays.Hmmmmm)
Anyway yeh the handbrake can help. I just thought it stopped the wheel spinning so much, but makes sense that the other wheel would gain some traction doing this.

I was just giving this a bit more thought and remembered that with my VY, the handbrake is either 'ON' or 'OFF'. There's no in between, and it doesn't matter whether it has recently been adjusted or if there's a bit of slack. Either way, when I pull the lever up, it gets to a spot when the handbrake will suddenly grab and the car aint going nowhere. I've read that some other JC members have the same thing happen, so I wonder if this trick would still work in the VY? Only one way to find out I guess.....

DO NOT snatch off a towball unless you want a chrome missile should something break.

Hmmm, nobody wants any missiles during a recovery, but at least the tow ball is designed to take a horizontal load. That brings me to the next issue we had - trying to find somewhere strong enough on the front of a VE to winch on - given that the tow point, aka 'tiny little slot' on each side of the VE was far too small for the winch hook on the Patrol to fit into. Was not happy !! It was a tricky puzzle to solve at 12.30am in a dark paddock.

Agreed. You shouldnt be snatching off anything less than a rated recovery point. You can buy these:

Which go in your towbar hitch. They're rated to 4.7T and cost $26.

Is there similar products that bolt to the towbar tongue rather than the ones the slide in? I need one for my van.

I have a light duty bar like this
