Hey guys, I was looking at upgrading the maps on my Tom Tom, but at $99 for 4 maps/1 year, and being tax time, I'm looking at getting a new GPS with lifetime map upgrades. I was just after some idea of what y'all use? I want something that pinpoints my location nice and quick, has accurate maps (preferably designed specifically for Australians.), and some kind of live traffic update. I'd post this in the LAN lounge, but it would never be seen again. Thanks guys!
me personally. Melways. very easy to reference and find locations on it. you can always add to it if required if in doubt jump on the phone and pinpoint using Nokia maps. maybe go into your local JB Hi Fi or the likes. you seem to know what you want, and youll be able to have a play and see which you prefer more. as when I was in there last week I had a look (someone else was wanting to look at them) and they all seemed very similar.
If you have any smart phone they'll out do any gps unit as the software is similar (if not better like Samsungs navigon app) and the speed of operation and screen quality would be far superior. Swyped from my Note 2 phablet...
Look on the GPS forums such as austech or GPS underground. I update my Tom Tom 4 times a year including speed/safety cameras without paying anything.
I accidently do the same. I prefer a dedicated GPS for now as dont have a phone cradle for the inbuilt navigation on it. TomToms i have used, heard that Garmin are pretty good as well.
Nah I'd prefer not to use my phone as I'm too busy texting and facebooking while I drive...(relax guys. Just taking the piss) I'll have a look at Harvey Norman/JB Hifi tomorrow.
I agree, I've driven a delivery truck for the last 7 years, and I've been using a Melways the whole time. GPS units **** me, especially in the city. You can't learn a road by listening to a GPS.
What pisses me off with every GPS except the IQ is that without reception, like interference / cloud cover / underground tunnels and covered bypasses, you can't get meaningful directions, miss the turn off, and there's no accurate location of speed cameras. IQ apparently uses the VSS to compensate, and that's fricken clever.
I've got a TomTom go 2050. Got it when they had the free lifetime maps promo. I do have to fork out $99 a year for the HD traffic updates, but they are well worth it. Mines in a bracket on the a pillar so I don't have to attach it to the windscreen. Bracket is powered too. So the unit is always charged. I find the Garmins hard to to use if your in a hurry. Personal preference I think though. I only use mine for long distance drives, or avoiding the traffic. Go and check out a couple, best way. And find a way to mount it without using the windscreen or having cables all over your dash. You will be much happier.
i got Tom tom app for iPhone on my computer and its the best thing i ever bought ,, works without cellular network and got live traffic updates and all redlight and speed cameras.
Until recently, I used Navman exclusively and was perfectly happy. However, I bought a Tom Tom Via 620 at the end of last year. Things I like: 1. 6 inch high resolution screen is excellent. 2. Functionality and detail of display and information is better than anything else I have seen. 3. Life time free map upgrades. 4. My TomTom allows regular update of satellite positions to enable quick start up. 5. My TomTom allows regular map updates friom verified user inputs in addition to full map upgrades - particularly good at getting changes in speed limits updated quickly. 6. Dash mounting option allows positioning of the GPS to eradicate the problem of reflection on the windsreen at night. Negatives: 1. No live traffic updates. 2. No bluetooth. Both these are not an issue for me as my 2013 SV6 has bluetooth and inbuilt Satnav. I tend to use the inbuilt GPS normally but duplicate with the Via 620 on extended trips as the Via is more accurate with arrival times and gives better safety warnings.
^^ same, I use a few concurrently to stop me from being bored sheetless travelling 1000k+/wk: • IQ SatNav very advanced for tunnels etc and constant live updates via the radio (most failsafe of all) • Apple Maps for integration of contacts and nav • Waze for traffic and alerts, citizen band, FourSquare and social media integration / discovery on the road and ranking • Escort Live! in conjunction with other hardware for more specific warnings • Trapster when I'm feeling paranoid or bored • WhereIs with those crack up voices for a laugh with friends • HUD.cam for stealth at night in Ninja Pirate mode EDIT: and DashCommand for the EDI / GPS Racetrack (and graphic real-time On Board Tech / Diagnostics)
Ended up grabbing one of these with free map upgrades! Garmin 4.3" Portable Navigation - Portable GPS Devices - JB Hi-Fi - Smashing Prices!
Tom Tom for iPhone, lifetime updates and you can put it on your families iPhones too, 3 mates of mine are using my TOm Tom and its only $80, heaps better than the stock sat-nav in my car, heading home onetime from Perth Tom Tom told me to go to the end of the road and turn right and 719km to home, the cars told me to turn left 780km to home. Both set on fastest route.
