I've got a TomTom go 2050. Got it when they had the free lifetime maps promo.
I do have to fork out $99 a year for the HD traffic updates, but they are well worth it. Mines in a bracket on the a pillar so I don't have to attach it to the windscreen. Bracket is powered too. So the unit is always charged. I find the Garmins hard to to use if your in a hurry. Personal preference I think though.

I only use mine for long distance drives, or avoiding the traffic.
Go and check out a couple, best way. And find a way to mount it without using the windscreen or having cables all over your dash. You will be much happier.

Until recently, I used Navman exclusively and was perfectly happy.

However, I bought a Tom Tom Via 620 at the end of last year. Things I like:

1. 6 inch high resolution screen is excellent.

2. Functionality and detail of display and information is better than anything else I have seen.

3. Life time free map upgrades.

4. My TomTom allows regular update of satellite positions to enable quick start up.

5. My TomTom allows regular map updates friom verified user inputs in addition to full map upgrades - particularly good at getting changes in speed limits updated quickly.

6. Dash mounting option allows positioning of the GPS to eradicate the problem of reflection on the windsreen at night.

Negatives:

1. No live traffic updates.

2. No bluetooth.

Both these are not an issue for me as my 2013 SV6 has bluetooth and inbuilt Satnav. I tend to use the inbuilt GPS normally but duplicate with the Via 620 on extended trips as the Via is more accurate with arrival times and gives better safety warnings.

^^ same, I use a few concurrently to stop me from being bored sheetless travelling 1000k+/wk:
• IQ SatNav very advanced for tunnels etc and constant live updates via the radio (most failsafe of all)
• Apple Maps for integration of contacts and nav
• Waze for traffic and alerts, citizen band, FourSquare and social media integration / discovery on the road and ranking
• Escort Live! in conjunction with other hardware for more specific warnings
• Trapster when I'm feeling paranoid or bored
• WhereIs with those crack up voices for a laugh with friends
• HUD.cam for stealth at night in Ninja Pirate mode

EDIT: and DashCommand for the EDI / GPS Racetrack (and graphic real-time On Board Tech / Diagnostics)

Tom Tom for iPhone, lifetime updates and you can put it on your families iPhones too, 3 mates of mine are using my TOm Tom and its only $80, heaps better than the stock sat-nav in my car, heading home onetime from Perth Tom Tom told me to go to the end of the road and turn right and 719km to home, the cars told me to turn left 780km to home. Both set on fastest route.
