Transmission guy said v8 auto was good for around 180/ 200k , but you never can tell what your lucks going to bring.
Can you tell me what revs was the maloo doing at 100 kph with the 3.7 gears

Mine's got 292xxx and auto untouched aside from fluid changes. Still works well.

While I might drive it with spirit from time to time, I don't thrash it.

Thanks , gtrboyy , done a few different calculations don't know which way I'll go yet . Don't believe I'm happy building a diff and just going 3.08 so it'll probably be either 3.46 or 3.73, just that the shorter ratio will means you're doing almost 2600 rpm at120 considering I use it for trips away occasionally I have to experiment a bit to see if I'm happy sitting at around that rpm on open road.
Yeah just think I got unlucky, don't believe in thrashing it, just drive it in a spirited manner occasionally.
Went to nsw all holden day today, beautiful day weather wise , lots of nice cars. Met a couple of other vs maloo owners and it has reinforced that I'm not ready to part with this car, in fact I can't wait to see what it's like with the rebuilt gearbox.
The other thing is how lucky I was to get a car that was virtually standard and unmolested ,which reinforces all my mods have to be easily reversible , just maybe a bit time consuming.
One example of my luck is apparently the hsv tub liner only became available from the series iii's . The previous owner bought it about this time and you could order the liner.

I was at that show yesterday...lot of for sale ads on parked cars outside

Arrangement of cars was bit disorganised.

Yeah swapped tubliners of brother's maloo with series 3 back in the day also.

You sure it's 2600 with overdive.

I'm assuming it is. Punched in wheel/tyre size, gear ratio and diff , rpm and worked it out, came out with 1,769 at 100klph , 2,14 at 120 with 3.08 diff and that corresponds with what speedo/ taco were displaying ,so figured what worked out with 3.73 diff was right , 2,140at 100 , 2,570 at 120.
I'll see how it goes when I get it back. Unless someone can tell me I'm wrong and not working it out correctly I think I'm leaning towards the 3.46 diff

Not sure I got specs right but can't see 400rpm hurting economy much compared to healthy performance gain of 3.7 gears.

At same time think 3.45 gears very minimal gain in performance & cost for speedo corrector,shifts corrected in memcal + parts/labour.

235/45/17
0.70
3.08 3.73
1780rpm = 100kph 2150rpm = 100kph
1950rpm = 109.65 2390rpm =110kph

Yeah that's about what I was getting , just 2570 at 120 I wasn't expecting quite that high, not that I do or condone that.
Yeah, utes ready , said I'd get home tomorrow arvo and ride pushy over and he's gone where are you, I'll meet you at your place and then you drop me back over.
So I'll see how it goes and then go from there. Even though had overtime lately if it wasn't for having some savings set aside I would have been going cheap second hand diff and have a mate help me change over.
Reality is there's a bit more savings there and more than likely that's where diff and brakes money will come just have to see, one step at a time

Brother's ute was still pulling 9-10 litres per 100km on cruise control & had thicker exhaust pipes also kept it 2.5" twin to single so it was quite nice on freeway never noticed revs tbh...it just seemed effortless.

My 355 sle did 2100rpm@60km/h :D

Damn it dropped it's guts in the pan. Built right it should be able to handle what ever you throw at it.

The VR/VS 4l60e's were probably the worst of the electronic transmissions, even the factory upgraded a fair few parts on the later models.

Upgrading to larger cooler lines like the later models is a good option, heat is the enemy of transmissions.
