Pricks, but all they are doing is following protocol. Plus, in your warranty docs I'm prety sure I read somewhere that any annoying noises and rattles and the like arent actually covered specifically. It's up to the dealers discretion when deciding on whether to fix it or not. The warranty is a functional warranty.... if it's working, its 'fine'.
Customer service wise is sucks dogs balls though.
Maybe go with GreenAcc's advice.... see if you can break it, and therefore force the replacement (under normal driving conditions of course ;)).
Get the other mechanic to see if he can give you more of an idea on what the problem is.... but I wouldnt be spending any money getting it fixed mate. The same reason Holden wont touch it is the same reason you shouldnt. You could spend thousands and the problem still wont be fixed.

    Sell it or break it.

You sound just like the dealer haha you're right though.. If I can figure out what it is, then I can figure out how to break it..

I live near Aspley so if you want , I am happy to have a listen and see if I can point you in the right direction.
Sometimes it just needs someone with a bit of common sense to look outside the square and find these problems.
PM me if you want. I am at Mooloolaba to Tuesday then back home.

Check the gearbox mount, I had an sv6 making a very similar noise. It was hard to find as the mount has not actually failed. To cut a long story short there is a small piece of rubber between the upper and lower section of the mount, when the rubber ages and sags this small insulator wears out and causes metal on metal contact, a bad design and a bad idea to fix the bad design!
The local dealer couldn't fix the one I looked either.

I might take you up on that, depending how the mechanic goes on Saturday, Thanks..

Did you just replace the rubber? Where did you get the part from? I will get this looked at tomorrow, sounds promising though, Thanks! :surprise:

I bought a new mount as that's what the owner wanted, but it could be easily rectified by placing some new rubber around the problem section, heater hose maybe. Cost for new mount was around $40 trade thru Gmh. I can see this being a common problem as the mount has insufficient clearance between the top and bottom, as soon as it sags a little it wears out the insulator and causes the noise. This particular car only had the problem when it was cold on the first few take offs, which made it even harder to find, but the noise is terrible when it makes contact.

I like your chances that this could be your problem schwanm. Actually i half suspect i have this problem as well as my car is nice and quiet when cruising and under light throttle, but when i go past half there's a rough grinding sound somewhere low down under neath. I was hoping like hell it wasn't timing chains or a big end, so i'll be cheering if its just a Gbox mount. How easy is it to access and replace / modify this mount ?

The one I replaced was a manual, I'm not too sure if the mounts are the same but I'd still be checking it out. The mounts are quite easy too replace if this is the problem, remember you are not looking for a failed mount but the area between the upper and lower section which is joined together by the vulcanised rubber, where insufficient clearance will cause occasional metal to metal contact.

The mount for autos is two solid rubber mounts approx 5cm thick, and they don't look compressed at all, so I don't think that's what's causing it. The mechanic I went to was certain it was a problem with the exhaust, a baffle or something loose inside the front section. He said it was the same noise earlier falcons made with exhaust problems.. Need to convince Holden to replace it if I can.. Alternatively, can anyone suggest a good aftermarket exhaust?

    Nup.... warranty will be fine.
No way Holden can void your entire warranty because of an aftermarket mod to car. The most they can do is try to worm their way out of something RELATED to the part you've changed.... for instance a suspension problem because you've changed springs.
But changing exhaust and then Holden claiming "umm.... engine fell out of car because of your exhaust and we arent covering it" is a bit of a stretch ;).

Check the diff, the sharpening knives noise you mentioned is exactly what my old VY SS used to sound like and it was the wrong diff oil after months and months of searching for it. It also would be almost like clockwork that it would make the noise after turning the corner and accelerating. It did also do it on coasting but only at speeds less than about 15kmh which is the only part that doesn't match your symptoms.

So bit of an update for you guys..

I had a transmission service done today, flush the fluid, replace filter and clean the sump..

.. And the noise is gone! Let it get cold, took it for a drive and it was silent and smooth everywhere that it used to make the grinding scraping sound :beer chug: awesome! Too bad Holden couldn't figure it out.

My VE SS had a grinding noise coming from it as well after I serviced my Auto Trans. Couldn't work out what it was. Then I checked the Trans oil level again and found it was a little low. Added around 1/2 a litre and the grinding noise went away.
This may have been the same noise as I had and may because it needed more fluid. I think the noise was from the torque converter.

I had a similar problem, took the car to three different holden dealers and Pedders.
I found my front sway bar components were faulty, I grabbed my sway bay and I could move it with little restriction sideways (approx 10-15mm), informed holden and they looked/replaced all faulty components under warranty. Noise has gone...happy chappy here...:yahoo:
