The other night i pulled in my driveway home from work. pulled up my handbrake in the normal way and at about halfway up it just gave out all tension. now it will move very losely up and down. two questions i have. firstly what is most likely to have gone wrong. and secondly. should i not drive the car now that the brakes have started playing up. or. cause the handbrake is on the blink is my car unsafe to drive.(other than for parking on hills etc.)
The handbrake is separate from the rear brakes so it won't affect it unless it is jammed on. I would say either the cable has broken or it has come off somewhere. Look under the car where the cables go to the inside of the rear discs and see what moves when the handbrake is pulled on. Follow the cable forward and check it. If all looks good under there but nothing moves when the lever is pulled on, then it is an issue with the lever itself. Take the console out and have a look.
