Hey guys,

Gotta take the harmonic balancer off my 1993 VR and was just wondering best way about going to do this ?

My old mans a tire fitter and they have all there rattle guns at the shop I could borrow.. Would these have enough power to crack the bolt loose?

Rattle guns are the best thing to use and the safe way to get that bolt lose.

Just get a long breaker bar and socket, put it on the balancer bolt and lean the handle of the bar on the chassis rail or the ground so it cant turn, and then crank the engine over. This will loosen the bolt. Then you need a 3 bolt type harmonic balancer puller tool to remove the balalncer, dont use the 3 leg type pullers if the balancer is to be used again, these type of pullers with the legs can seperate the balancers metal and rubber parts, stuffing the balancer. At $200 or more for a new balancer, they arent cheap to replace. The bolts that screw into the balancer have a 1/4 UNF thread.

normally i just use a three legger but i use the flange on the inside edge (where it slips over crank in middle of balancer)
as long as puller is good it gets them off without damage
hmm hard to explain where to put it... like if you picture the outside where the belt goes then look at the center of balancer and
see where the "spokes" join onto i go just behind the lip of the spokesin the middle of each spoke
and i agree if you have a siezed bolt in the crank (you'd be surprised when a 100ft rattle gun wont get it off first)
a bar can be used but be careful you have the right direction and its not resting onn anything breakable
if this wont get it cranks but wont turn bolt loose
put a jump battery on it with the earth on the metal of the engine (black lead from jumper onto engine hook for e.g.)
the extra electrical energy available can sometimes force it loose

I just got a cheapie balancer puller from supercheap, and it works excellent. The bolts that came with it didnt fit these balancers though,I also had to go get some 1/4 UNF bolts from the local hardware store for a couple of dollars. The 3 bolts you need should be 2-3 inches long too.

yeah thats right make sure you have correct thread or youls stuff the balancer
as in you wont be able to get it off without specialist expensive balancer puller
i use the super cheap ones but you have to be careful you got them straight ive noted on one of theirs that it bent
only happend once now i make sure the bolt im pushing off has a flat head on it~!
