I agree with UFO a little here. The SIDI is an excellent unit with enough poke to keep you interested as well as a reasonable sporty sound in the cab...granted it doesn't have the poke of an 8 nor the the sound but it is also 8-10k cheaper (new) and as UFO says you can spend your 8-10k on a lot of mods. Yeah, yeah without force feeding it ya won't see the same performance as the 8 but just spending 5k on your SIDI has it sitting lower, sounding OK, looking good and accelerating the same as a stock 8 of only a few years gone. Either way it is a personal choice...guess the best way is to take a drive in both and then way up your pros and cons such as performance, costs, maintencance, resale, risk of buying second hand etc etc.

UFO and Jarp do have good points its all down to what you want from the car really, ive been from a 6 to an 8 and its not that much more expensive maybe another 10 bucks extra on fuel and $100 on rego and that, i had done pretty much every bolt on mod to my v6 and it went hard for a v6 but still no chance agaisnt my stock v8, let us know how you go dude :)

I think the first question should be about your budget. What are you looking to spend? Second hand WMs are coming into a decent price range at the moment and they could be another option for you. They have all the usual luxury appointments and a few extras too.

After doing a bit of research today, I have eliminated the 2011 SV6 because its price range is 36k inc onroad costs and as UFO said since this car will be half financed insurance is a big jump for an extra 5k. I am on the hunt for a Calais (doesn't have to be V spec) (V8) or SS for about $30,000 what sort of KM's should I be looking at and what year should I automatically not buy? (I have been told I think 2008 onwards had alot of fixes, someone verify this?)

I'm actually not a fan of the Sv6 Spoilers, which is why I'm happy to stay in the Calais direction:) I do also have a daily driver this car I'm planning on purchasing is something I would like to be able to drive on days I'm not commuting to and from work but the occasional Fridays to feel like the coin Ive been working hard for every week pays off.

SV6 and SS are no comparison, and if the screen is all your worried about there are aftermarket options for touchscreens that can be fitted for under 2k including sat nav and dvd.
Since your looking at calais I'm guessing you can only drive auto so I would definately be going the V8 and thankfully you've decided that as well.
You can pick up 08 model ssv for around 30k so just be patient till the right one pops up.
On the fixes thing, every new car year model has bugs ironed out, in some cases every 6 months hence the MY9.5 commodore.

6 months ago I got an '06 SSV, manual 50,000kms for $30k. As previously mentioned there are bargains to be had if you look. Love the V8, runs like a dream.
