    Heellppppppp! Auto swap.......

I'm about to attempt a swap of the auto in my VR 3.8 and was wondering if
anyone has encountered any unforeseen complications etc..... that the
workshop books tend to avoid mentioning.
Alos how long can joe average expect to take to do it?
Any advice on offer would be appreciated.
    Cheers

I did a trans swap on a mates VS v6. on my own but used a hoist and rattle gun. with a few rest breaks it took me about 5 hours.

My main difficulties were (a) messing about with taking the exhaust off, coz the d1ckhe@ds at profix welded the thing entirely together from secondary pipes to the tip!!:bang: (b) fashioning up a wheely stand to lower the trans onto. and (c) the two trans lines on the top of the trans are a pain to remove!!

Other then that everything is very straight forward! and it all worked perfect wen i put it all back together. I reckon i did a pretty good job considering its the first transmission transplant ive ever done!:D

p.s. i actually forgot to bring my gregory's with me when i went out to the workshop to do it haha. great learning experience!

    Thanks for the tips,
what do I need with regards to replacement seals etc..... are there o-rings
on the 2 trans lines that will need replacing, or gaskets on the exhaust?

*If you think you are up to the task, go for it. but if you are unsure, i urge you to get someone in the know to help you.

Make sure the replacement trans is empty of all fluid so that it is light-er (they are HEAVY bastards!!) also drain the fluid out of the trans that is coming out, and put the pan back on. having a mate there to help you would be BEST! i didnt, what a pain  Just remember where all bolts came from, coz thats where they will go back!

If the box you are putting in is in good nick, and you are careful sliding the box onto the motor the seals should be fine. BE SURE that the slots on the trans shaft will line up with the converter (sorry i dont know the technical names) Carefully align the imput shaft to the motor and carefully wriggle it up and down while pushing toward the front. The bellhousing should mate up to the rear of the motor after a bit of persuasion! Then get the mate to put some bolts on to hold it on.

As for the two oil lines! i actually had to cut them off and customize the replacement. You will understand what i mean wen u get to it! not hard tho..

In regards to exhaust gaskets.. if you are careful the ones on there will reuse fine, or just buy new as u need.

Everything is pretty straight forward and logical.

    Important notes..

-Have your Gregory's service manual on hand for help!
-buy new trans fluid (you will need heaps!!) Gregory's will help you for amounts!
-Buy a new filter and pan gasket kit
-Buy a cold carton of your fav beer!
-make sure you have some relaxing music on, you will need it haha
-When its all in.. MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THE FLUID LEVEL WHILE THE CAR IS RUNNING AND WARM or else you get a false reading.
-test drive and make sure all is running good
-Finally, sit back with the mate and finish off the rest of that carton of beer, oh and dont drink drive! :p

i think i covered all you need to know

    good luck
