Does the TV have the sound of the computer going through it using the HDMI cable? Normally HDMI will carry the sound signal and you will use the TV speakers or whatever speakers are hooked to the TV.

Spdif is a optical connection for sound output, some speaker systems have a spdif in as an input, you shouldn't need to use it in your case. If I were you I would use a nice set computer speakers, much better than the TV, but the TV sound should be working with the HDMI cable.

no sound through the hdmi cable. I even tried unplugging the speaker wire from the comps on board sound. The start up music and sound from an avi file now comes on from the on board speaker.

You need to plug the spdif from your graphics card to your sound card or motherboard to get sound through your hdmi cable.
