3.08s or 3.45s at the MOST for a turbo. The taller the gears the better

You'll find the diff gears won't make that much difference in off-the-line performance - I got 3.73s in my VP, and found it more useful in the hills. Brought the gears together, and made the car more drivable at more speeds.

I also drove the car from Melbourne to Brisbane, and didn't find the 3.73s too short at all :)

You answered your own question before, if you go 3.45's, which i have in my senator(manual 6 speed) you will only wish you had gone 3.7's, it will liven it up and you have 4 gears anyway. I need to swap to 3.9.

As Greenfoam said, 3.45 max. Because you want to be able to use the boost for longer. With short ratios and forced induction, By the time you come on boose, you met redline way to fast

Do you know what ratios your box has, compared to the T56 from a late model LS1, apparently the LS1 box has really short gears. Or is that all 6 speeds (LS1 and Holden strokers)?

They have different ratios, but they are both fairly short. I was hitting 4th by the end of the 1/8 and that was at only 80mph. so I think the VR/VS 6spd has closer ratios. I could be wrong though. In 6th at 90km it sits happy at 1500rpm

I figured they were different, i was hoping someone had the actual numbers for each gear so i can compare it to the box i have, and to the old T5...

The T56 ratios used in the Commodore are:

2.66 (1st)
1.78 (2nd)
1.30 (3rd)
1.00 (4th)
0.74 (5th)
0.50 (6th)

2.90 (Reverse)

There was another version with slightly shorter ratios used in the VZ Coupes.

The ratios are hardly what I'd call short, to give you some idea of road speed at redline with those gear ratios and a 3.72 final drive:

65km/h (1st)
120km/h (2nd)
150km/h (3rd)

I don't know for sure, but those are the "standard" ratios for the box, so it seems quite likely the VR/VS would be the same.
