Hi all. trying to keep my VL commodore on the road until I can get the time to start restoring it.
I had a coolant leak from those dreaded heater hoses (one runs behind the inlet manifold to the rear of the block and the one that runs to the front of the motor)
When I removed the hoses I found the fittings on the block are both really corroded. Can someone tell me how I can remove the old ones and replace them.
Are they threaded into the block or somehow pressed? If anyone knows how to replace them could they advise please.

I had a 87 VL Exective [as a Daily Work Car], but can not remember how the Heater Hoses connected,
As I had the common dreaded 140,000 K/m head gasket failure on it.

As for the fittings, I am guessing they would have been pressed in.
To fix it properly, I would look for Brass Theaded fittings of a similar size and buy the Thread Tap to suit,
And see if you can cut a thread into the outlet position/location,
put some sealent on the threads, and screw the brass fittings in.
Probably be fixed for life.

Thanks for the reply. I wonder what grade of steel or iron the block is made of. it will probably decide if it could be tapped or not.

Any engine block can be tapped they're not made of tool steel or HSS ffs.

thanks shane, guess then it will come down to how much depth there is in between the opening and the wall of the cylinder.
I wonder if anyone has had a go at this before

Just make sure you use WD-40 while tapping to clear the swarf out that's what makes taps bind and snap.

Or a Thread Cutting Compoud.
The one I have for using for Steel Conduit Threads, it is like a green paste, and works well.
The same paste as the plumbers use for cutting threads.

I am retired plumber and I use oil from the oil can;)
If a pic were to be put up with approx hole size, I may be able to advise further cause I seem to remember the fittings being about 1/2" bsp size
When finished cutting a thread in that position, it's easy enough to simply use the hose in the radiator to flush any swarf out through the hole
