Hi everyone, I am writing on behalf of a friend. He has recently brought a VS Commodore and Had the whole top end rebuilt. Now it will start and but stall after a short distance. He has exhausted all finances and is quite upset now. He is only on the disability pension and this is the car he was going to get his L's with. He is located in the Newcastle / Port Stephens area. Any mechanical assistance or advice would be great fully appreciated.
Metal flakes possibly indicate something was screwed up during the top end overhaul and that will have to be rectified before the engine is running otherwise the motor will be stuffed. 2nd hand engines are very cheap ~$400 will buy one in fact for a bit more you can get a complete car so throwing good money after bad may not be a good idea.
It is at the point he has spent all of his money on the car. He doesn't have the option to buy anything else.
Well car stalled and wont restart. I have tried turning the harmonic balancer with a spanner. And there is NO movement.
Sounds hectic. If work was performed at a workshop I'd be getting it towed there and telling them to deal with it. If not, check the timing case for things that could've come loose etc. I've seen tensioner bolts left loose and they've let go on first start and caused all sorts of dramas! Good luck!
This Melbourne wrecker sells them with 3 months warranty for $499 or near offer VS (VT VX VY) COMMODORE CALAIS V6 ECOTEC ENGINE MOTOR GOOD COND 3 MONTH WARRANTY | eBay If you buy private you will get one for $400 - places to look are noticeboards in Woolies/Coles/IGA etc. You can buy complete cars for the same money at council auctions where they sell abandoned cars.
Also look in your local trader. Eg gumtree and trading post ect as i picked up a wrecker unlicensed for $500. Took the trans, radiator and alot of other fiddly parts out. Trans and radiator were worth the 500 i paid
Wish I could find a second-hand ECOTEC for less than $500 EDIT: There's a LOW-KM VY V6 for sale here in Sydney, $1000 - 90,000kms.
