My dad bought this derelict Hillman imp that had been Rotting for nearly 30 years with 20k miles on the clock!!!

Its a hillman imp GT and has

998cc rear engine with twin SU carbies
The interior was Vgood. as you would expect from a car with 20k on the clock.

the goal was a ground up rebuild for historic registry and for Coventry class (i think thats what it is called)

here are some pics when we first looked at it.... (i kept the amount of pics on this thread to a minimum.. there where literally hundreds)

Obviously a lot more went into this but i didnt want to make a thread too big

After ALOT of spanner throwing and heartache this is the end resault of the build. In total it took about 6 months. Pretty quick if u ask me.

Well done matey. Good to see people saving pieces of automotive history like this. May not be a big horsepower super car but still deserves the time and effort of a quality restoration like this.

A job well done :) One point, you dont really know if it has 20k on the clock, it could just as easily be 120k.. but effectively it now has 0k since its a total restoration anyway so the point is moot I guess.

There should be more of this, hats off to ya.

cheers guys

To the point of the miles....

The car was built in 1978 by the roots group and was last registered in 1972... i doubt that a car can do 120k in 4 years :)... i was sceptical at first aswell, but the maths for 120k didnt add up. the pictures of it when it was on the grass was taken in geelong for the national classics rally where it won best imp in show (mind you there was only 4 others present) hahaha

Excellent that you know the history :) Handy that it was last registered in 72, I agree that 120k miles (193k km) doesnt add up for 4 years. Built in 68 not 78 though lol..

Nice little car mate, bursting with character.

Great work. :) Makes you wonder though why someone would just leave a near-new car like that with low miles to just sit there and rot...you'd think that they would have sold it back in the day.

Really nice job, looks fantastic, I remember these, I had a friend who had a metalic bronze GT and use to pick me up in it and drive me to work,
it was a good little car.
