hey fellow vl owners
in the process off fixing my high beams for roadworthy, just having issues with the H-B staying on, they stay on if i holf the stalk backwards, but as soon as i release the stalk back to its original position the lights go off alltogether, untill i pull back on the stalk again and it goes back to regular beam.
any help on the matter would be appreciated

I'd try another stalk first. From memory (owned a few VL's but been a while since the last one) going to high beam turns off low beam, so when you are going to high beam and losing all lights when you release the stalk it sounds like the connection is breaking. The fact that high beam works when you pull the stalk back suggests that everything else is ok, fuse, relay, wiring. When you go to high beam you usually hear a click in the stalk, that's the contacts in the switch meeting to activate high beam. They might be letting go when you release it.

Relay?

Try changing out the relay, use maybe a similar one already on the car as a test

Hey uniacid, have swapped over relays too supply and headlamp too no avail,
Is there some small chance it's the globe/globes? Seeing as both work when I hold it back I figured they weren't the problem..

Have you physically checked the bulbs/globes that they haven't welded the filaments together so only high beam would glow (no matter what beam is selected)???

Grab a volt meter & check the voltage on either side of the headlight plug & see if that you get 12V on low & high pins (green & tan as in diagram above). Then head back to the relays, fuse panel & finally switch.

If its not the stalks, then must be a gremlin.
Earth?

But should work.

You trying high beam when car headlights are on? As when car lights off, the flick forward wont work, only rear pullback would work
