i have notced in the last couple weeks that on cold start up and after running for a while it has a high idle. like its at 1500. what woul cause something like this? and i dont understand the engine light flashing sequence to check the error codes so i cant do that
Do you notice the engine light on when you are driving? If so then you really should learn how to short the ALDL pins and count the flashes. its very easy and I'm sure there are instructions on this forum how to do it. I'm no expert but high idle could be one of many things including IAC, air leak or faulty coolant, temp sensor. You need to do some testing. I strongly suggest buying the Gregory's book for your model, it will detail the steps you need to take and error codes with ways to narrow down issues. Clacks
ill show you how to check error codes at the next cruise if you want - its a piece of cake. as for the idle it would likely be the IAC valve...which is the thing with wires running to it on the very top of the throttle body. unplug it, take the two screws out and clean it up and check to see if it moves freely. then take out your engine fuse for a a while, put in back in and start the car, then go for a drive.
the engine light has come on a couple times. but has gone away after i have turned the engine off for around 5 mins. the problem happens on and off. it sometimes sits at 1100, sometimes at 900 and sometimes at 1200-1500. i know how to short it out but dont really get how to read the flashing light thing
Have you read the full how-to guide in the how to section. Its really straight forward. It explains everything. Check the vacuum hoses on the throttle body, and the iac valve as sircruisealotVS suggested. There is a how-to on here somewhere about cleaning the throttle body, that will show you how to get to the iac valve. Good idea to clean the throttle body and replace the gaskets while you are there. Just a quick Q for sircruisealotVS, I recently adjusted my iac valve, it definatly didnt move freely, i didnt think they would. I reduced the length to the 28mm specifications, it was fairly tight, and needed to be wobbled side to side while i applied pressure to it. I had no need to pull it out further, but it didnt feel like it would come out. Felt really solid. Can someone just confirm for me that this is right?
yeah, they wont move about easily - maybe i should elaborate and say by "moving freely" i mean that it can be moved, lol. ive taken some out before that are so caked with carbon build up that the pintle part cant move in or out at all. with gentle force you should be able to move the pintle part in and out, i usually just screw them like a bolt so it doesnt suddenly give way and come all the way out or push all the way into the sensor housing.
