Hey guys, I'll be installing a full SQ audio system in my VF2 next year so I'll be needing to upgrade the alternator. Closest thing I've found are Corvette alts for the LS3 (nothing available for the Chevy SS): https://www.dcpowerinc.com/fit/Chevrolet~Corvette~2012~6.2L-LS3-V8/13968-270-xp.html http://www.mechman.com/alternators/...g-alternator-for-c6-corvette-machined-finish/ Am I guessing these may be compatible because they use the same engine, or am I completely missing something? Cheers
Hum... Well, you need the correct frame size along with the correct connector and charge wire location. Clocking can be achieved easily, so that's not a big issue. B.
How about this one? Looks like it is correct. I have one of their alternators in my diesel truck. Been running great no problems now for 8 months. B. https://www.ebay.com/itm/250-AMP-Al...wZlZaO-49:sc:USPSPriority!95236!US!-1&vxp=mtr
Wow, that looks great - thanks for your help LodiBruce, exactly what I was after! Edit: Hmmm, finding some bad reviews on bnrparts alternators from a quick search, but will continue investigating.
Yep. You can also rebuild your alternator with higher output components. They are easy to do. I think our alternators are AD230/AD244 series. Trying to confirm that. As soon as I do I will post a link to a very reputable company you can buy the parts from. Or new alternators as well. B.
I've spoken with the staff from JS Alternators and they have the following available: 250amps - $359US 320amps - $459US 370amps - $559US I've also heard the brand Singer being mentioned so will look into them too.
Holmart have genuine 170amp alternators atm. 20% more grunt for less $ than the 140amp stock version. A fair way short of 250amp, but they might interest others that don't have the quite the power demands. https://www.holmart.com.au/holden-hsv-vf-lsa-ls3-l77-v8-6.2l-alternator-rare
Cheers banjo. My amplifiers will be producing 5kW RMS, so gonna need some decent grunt to keep the batts charged
Right. I was way off. You mentioned SQ, probably SPL would be more accurate. Are Commodores screwed together well enough for 5000w rms not to rip them apart? Helluva system, good luck.
Hahaha, unfortunately I'm not sure how well the commodore will handle the output, but she'll be sound deadened to the best of my abilities. Most definitely a full SQ install - I have no time for SQL (but hey, we'd be lying if we said we didn't like your music loud sometimes ). Here's my last install for reference and a preview of the gear to be used again (mostly the same):
Do those have bigger pulleys? When I worked in geophysics, we had 300 Amp alternator on the equipment truck, and it needed a big pulley (otherwise the drive belt would slip at full load) but then with the engine idling, the dash discharge light came on...
So how does one embarking on such a substantial audio upgrade calculate the alternator size required? Golden rule, stab in the dark, educated guess or all three?
So a Commy is making a couple of thousand watts. Very roughly half chewed by the car. So a 1000wrms sub with a 4 x 150wrms amp or thereabouts would be safe at normal to loud volume but totally battery draining at full tilt? "God my stereo sounds bitchin, but why the hell is my steering so damn heavy said the VF driver to the VE passenger!"
Oversight. I failed to take into account at what RPM those couple o thousand watts are being made. So a 140amp alt is rated at what RPM to make those amps?
