ok so warmed her up, started squealing, unplug the purge solenoid and no change.

Unplugged a couple of injectors, besides running rough, no change

Unplugged iat and TPS, no change.

I'll run the belt off later this afternoon to check accessories. Changed the oil and at least the lifter tick has stopped.

Other ideas?

Oh, this is an ecotec. The noise sounded like a vacuum leak. Check all the vacuum lines like the hose to the booster and the vacuum ball under the front guard. Brake boosters fail sometimes and the balls are only plastic.

Balls?

Brakes still work fine, no change in pedal
feel. I'll double check the hoses too, Cheers for that

would one assume vacuum if ok if I can pump the brakes a couple times before it gets hard?

I think the ball is a reservoir for climate control.
The brake vacuum is held by the brake booster.

Ahh the vacuum ball, sorry I thought you were indicating there was a plastic bag in the booster. I'll check it.

Grey_hawk, all VS models has them.

Could be either a pinhole or rubber hose that has hardened, perhaps trimming a bit off of the end of vacuum hoses might get a better seal.

I believe I've found it. I reached back behind the manifold and I believe the manifold halves are leaking. I could change the sound by covering where the halves meet.

Took the plenum cover off, quickly nipped up the bolts which were right anyway. Replaced cover and didn't have any effect.

Striped it down to split it and it has a metal type gasket which is warped, and has oil outside of the mating area.

My question is, do I need a gasket between the halves? Mine doesn't have the o-ring grooves

There's a metal gasket between the pieces of the intake manifold but the gasket between the heads and bottom half should be plastic.

I have put gasket maker between the halves before without issue and turfed the metal gasket as a temp fix that lasted longer then the car :p
