Car producer Holden today opened its new $200-million Melbourne headquarters and changed its name, the new identity reflecting its increasingly close ties with its parent company, General Motors.
The company will now be known as GM Holden Ltd, restoring the reference to the US group which had been part of its name for all but six years of its history in Australia since 1931.

Previously known as General Motors-Holden, the company became just Holden Ltd in 1998.

Today's change followed the recent export deal to send the Monaro to the US and also came as the company brought 1500 employees in Melbourne under the one roof.

Holden said the facility, built alongside its original 1930s headquarters at Port Melbourne, would celebrate a new phase in Holden's history.

"The move comes at a pivotal point in our history as we prepare for an all-new Commodore range in 2006," managing director Denny Mooney said.

"It creates greater opportunity for Holden teams to work more collaboratively and openly and comes on top of our own $2-billion, five-year investment program for Australia by 2006."

The facility will also be home to officials of the Saab car company, bringing the two GM brands together for the first time.

They will continue to operate separately in dealing with customers but share back office and administrative functions.

The building was financed by the Mirvac Group and will be leased back to Holden on a long-term arrangement.

It provides 20,400sq m of office space inside the three-storey structure which also includes two full-height atrium spaces and links to a new multi-storey car park.

Mirvac Group managing director Greg Paramor said his company had delivered a unique building for Holden and had created an exceptional investment.

The building also introduces new environmentally friendly features including a rainwater irrigation system which uses water from the carpark roof to reduce water consumption and programmed lighting which senses the level of external light and automatically adjusts internal light levels to compensate.

It also has roof-mounted solar panels which provide the building with hot water.

Holden employees have begun moving into the building with the final teams due to take up residence in early July.
