In days gone by, there was a clear distinction in performance and economy between auto and manual. Not so these days and the reasons for buying a manual over an auto really come down to purchase costs and/or personal preference by a very small percentage of new car buyers. Some cars have too much torque for a manual but the auto handles it with ease. Holden has been marketing their performance cars with autos as standard for that reason for years. Manufacturers don't give a damn about the loss of manual transmission sales- they're happy to sell you an auto, whatever the car is, and pick up the additional profit over the manual.

For the daft amongst us:

1. The price differences are off the manufacturer RRP. Actual sale price is very different
2. It's not $10k off every model.

Not DAFT you smartarse. Just seen the **** boxes advertised for 35k

You are comparing list price with a runout sale price. Seems pretty daft to me

If the community as a whole leaned in preference towards manual then it would be the case.

I don't know where home is, but in Aus manual orders OEM are getting fewwer and fewwer. In another class of car, go try to sell a mazda 3 or corolla manual vs auto. Some people will want a manual and not consider an auto however they are very very much in the minority with most wanting only an auto and will not consider a manual.
For me, I'm not bothered which I buy when I go second hand. If it ends up being a manual, so be it and vice versa if it ends up being an auto, I don't mind either.

So, the interior pics of the VF look mint. But is anyone concerned that price cuts and improved technology will ruin the quality even further? Don't get me wrong, in the grand scheme the Commodore is a budget vehicle, so quality is questionable by comparison, but will it end up being a "skin deep" in terms of quality for the sake of cost saving and throwing in some new goodies?

It's interesting to see the rationalisation of the model range. Omega and Berlina gone, replaced by Evoke. I wonder if Range Rover will complain about that name as they already have the Evoque. Car companies get pretty funny about keeping their model names to themselves, even if the spelling is different.

Depends if they have trademarked the spelling "Evoke" or not.
