152 000 and holden are looking at it but have made it very clear any payment they make will be be a 'goodwill gesture'

You have a car that is not just a little out of warranty and thus any repair would be a 'goodwill gesture'. I would see what they offer and then possibly get onto Holden's public affairs department and see if they can help. Always be polite but also stay firm.

I have a 06 vz commodore with 135000kms. was in my mechanic for 4 weeks being diagnosed.found out to be a stretched timing chain.did some research and found it was a common problem with those motors.even our local holden mechanic admitted to the renowned problem. i contacted holden head office and reported it. car was towed to local holden dealer were it was re-diagnosed as stretched timing chain.
still waiting to hear from holden customer service as to whether they are going to pay for it. she said she'd ring me monday with an answer its now wednesday night.
been with out my car for 6 weeks ..getting a little impatient.

wrong section mate... this area is for VE's not VZ's.

but just out of curiousity, what makes you think holden is going to foot the bill out of warranty?
whether its a common problem or not isnt the issue. has there been a recall for this particular problem?
(this is where the VZ section might be able to help further)

you will find that vz and ve motors are pretty much the same.
and no there hasnt been a recall but there should of been.it has happened to too many motors. If they had of put the proper chain on when manufactured the problem would not be happening. why should we pay for there stuff up??

Your car is 6 years old and you're chasing money from Holden?

Maybe i should see if Holden will pay for my AFM or CAS on my VL. That is a renowned problem that has happened to plenty of motors.

Your car is old. And out of warranty. Stop trawling the forum digging up threads about this.

hi

I have also had the engine warning light problem. In my case it was the timing chain that had stretch and they charged me $3000 at Holden to fix it as my vehicle was out of warranty. Its a VE 2006 omega with 122,000 km's. What I was PI$$ED about was the fact I found out after paying them that they KNOW about this issue. Even though I asked the service manager if he'd ever seen this before. Here is some info I found on the net from GM.

Please see this GM bulletin below:

H08-0601-01: Timing Chain Stretch and/or DTCs P0008, P0009, P0016, P0017,
P0018, P0019

Built Prior to Engine Number H071380576

A condition may occur with the HFV6 engine that will cause the MIL
to illuminate and may log DTCs P0008, P0009, P0016, P0017, P0018 and
P0019. Codes are set when the ECM detects that camshafts on either
bank of the engine are misaligned with the crankshaft. For a more
complete description of code setting parameters, refer to SI.
Important: This condition may affect the 7.7 mm pitch timing
chain, installed in engines after the following engine
number: H053340001.

The customer will only notice an engine warning light in
the instrument panel. This condition does not cause any obvious
driveability concerns or any abnormal engine noises.

There was an issue with the time chain manufacturing process
that caused, in a small number of engines, the chain links to
be outside design specifications. Over time, this may result in
chain elongation.

The degree of chain elongation will depend of the number of
affected links and the drive cycle of the engine during its life.
Typical expectation is that ECM detectable chain elongation
would occur in early engine life (i.e. 10,000 to 20,000 km).

If the vehicle meets the criteria explained, with any of
the previously mentioned DTCs logged in the ECM, the standard
service instructions for DTCs P0016, P0017, P0018, P0019 and P0008
and P0009 must be followed, prior to any diagnostic work being done
on the timing chains.
Refer to Engine Controls & Fuel – 3.6L,
DTC P0016, P0016, P0018, P0019 or document # 1985724 in SI or
Engine Control & Fuel – 3.6L, DTC P0008, P0009 or document #1985715
in SI.

ONLY the timing chains need to be replaced.
Idlers, guides and tensioners do not require replacement.
However, inspect the guides for any abnormal wear and replace
ONLY if necessary.

Once the original used chains have been removed, check the
free length against new, unused chains to confirm diagnosis. Ensure
that the chains are either laid flat on a bench and pulled
straight with no kinks or hung out straight vertically. Typical
chain elongation observed is a minimum of 3 mm on a doubled-up
chain, taking an approximate measurement.

hi there
just wondering where you got this bulletin and if it is legitament. i am currently going through the same fight with holden.looking for anything to use against them

Phantom SSV
You do realize that when Holden replace a faulty part under warranty that they recoup the lost $ from the supplier who supplied it to them , ie when the washer bottles leaked it cost the company making them a stack not Holden.

If your car is out of warranty then the parts with their supplier will be too.

In regards to the bulletin they are only a guide and doesn't automatically mean your vehicle was affected. I have an SSV and used to get the bulletins and I can tell you that a lot of the things relating my model have not occurred in the 5 years and are not likely to occur.

It took me 2.5 years to get my gearox and clutch replaced under warranty while i was in warranty, Save yourself the heartache and don't pursue an argument you have a 1% chance of winning.

2007 Captiva LX
Hi all, I am about to fight tooth and nail with Holden Australia as I to have been stung by the timing chain issue with my 2007 Holden Captiva LX Petrol. Currently I am waiting for a call back from Holden which I expect tmrw and need some ammunition to back up my case.

The local mechanic advised me of the following codes to supply to Holden:

P0300, P0017, P0016

I have a full log book history and am the second owner. I brought the car from a dealer at 99000km 2 years ago (so that would be just on the 5 year manufacturers warranty) which is no doubt why the previous owner sold it, now it sits on 140000km. A few months after I purchased the Captiva I got the engine symbol on the dash took it into the mechanics but they could not fault it putting it down to a dirty sensor or something; the car was fine or so it seemed. 2 years later I am here about to embark on the little person against Holden.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
