And the interior light cover on my VS had Ford on it. Should I have been posting on the Ford forums ?

You could if you want......Maybe I should post on the Ford Forums, when I have a EL Falcon alternator on my commodore

Getting back on track to the rust issue, I'm still not convinced that this surface rust will progress very much, if at all. To be honest I can't be bothered getting in there and painting it, but what I will do is take a few photos now, and then again in a few years to see if its changed. Strongly suspecting it won't have.

VE firewall pedal plate.
It is mild steel. 10 years old.
Changed to high density plastic on the VF.

Thanks for photo Fu, it explains the issue well that the origin of corrosion here is heat affected areas.
The pressed and punched locations are almost rust free.
Standard good engineering practice is to avoid heat wherever possible and if you can't, passivate the area.
Unless you factor in replacing the item frequently.

Good pic but different situation - the firewall pedal plate is part of the firewall and so is exposed to the weather since all the rainwater that comes in through the radiator would pass down each side of the engine and then hit the firewall - nice and warm too to help the rust along...

Simply illustrating that, what starts as surface rust develops into other things.
Similar theme in that the weld areas have started to rust.
pick the eyes out of it if you will, but rust is rust.

Yep Fu - warm firewall would help to evaporate off the water.
Its the colder/bad geometry parts of the car that rust worse since the water doesn't evaporate, run off or gets trapped.
As I have said before, once rust is in car steel, it just keeps going. c.f. cars of the 70's and 80's especially, due to design and metallurgy.
