I want to thoroughly drain the cooling system but i cant seem to get all the coolant out from the engine. Ive flushed it 3 times by now and everytime ive drained the cooling system by removing the bottom radiator hose. But that seems to drain only about 4-5 liters. I believe the cooling system holds 12 liters. So how can i completely drain the coolant from the cooling system? Cheers!
You will need to remove the knock sensors to drain it completely and that is more trouble than it is worth for most people.
I was afraid that might be the only way. Reason i want to drain all the coolant is cz i recently had a blown head gasket. Now im having a hard time removing all the oil from the cooling system. Flushing doesnt seem to do that great a job cz i still see some oil when i open the rad cap. I even tried flushing with dishwasher detergent. That worked way better than just water but since more than half the coolant was still in the engine...i couldn't get all the oil out. Any instructions on how to remove knock sensors?
This thread http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/vy-holden-commodore-2002-2004/78759-flush-radiator-vy-v8.html I was and prob will do as this when i change my radiator and hoses. Top radiator hose, undo, chuck a hose into it on full, heater on full and run car. Seems easiest way
My flatmate blew the head gasket in his vl late last year and stuffed the engine. There was oil all through the system. He had to get the radiator dipped to clean it and have the whole cooling system professionaly cleaned out. Dont know how bad yours is but if there is still oil in the system I"d be getting it done properly.
I don't know if trans fluid is much different to engine oil, but when the heat exchanger in my rad cracked and let heaps of trans fluid into the coolant, around 30-45 minutes of flushing with water and there's not a trace of trans fluid in the new rad now.
I to had the same problem when I recently replaced the radiator and some one in here said to remove the thermostat and run water through the engine. Look up, A radiator flush question: the guy who replied went into detail how to service the entire cooling question and fully answered the draining problem.
