Hi all, just wondering if anyone can help me with instructions on how to install a Stebel air horn in my Ve Calais. I realise i will have to use a relay, where do i get power from under the bonnet? I presume i can use the factory horn switch as the trigger? Any help would be appreciated
How to install Stebel Air Horn - YouTube wouldn't you just simple remove the existing horn and use the power from that????
Yeah Id say you would unplug the connector from the exisiting horn and use that? Calais may have 2 horns so d/c both and use one for trigger and tape the other one up so it doesnt short.
All fixed, just connected it which the existing wiring and works fine, very loud and European sounding. Very happy with the result
old thread, I know... I'm going to buy one of these. Did you install the relay that comes with it, or was it literally a direct swap over job?
No not technically, air horns no, electropneumatic no, electromagnetic yes. The Stebel HF (high freq) and HM (main) are direct replacement horns, the HM 80 Magnum Twin (I have this one) is 3db louder x 2 horns and looks, fits almost exactly the same. I also have twin truck horns that I am looking to fit with a remote switch (because they are illegal).
Perhaps you may wish to elaborate and provide us with the reference to the Australian Design Rules (ADR) in respect to 'horns/warning devices'.
Thanks for info PIR4TE, I was looking online today at Stebels and was about the put this idea in the too hard basket
I added a Marco tornado horn which is the same as a stebel nautilus to my MY10 VE SSV. The SSV comes with 3 horns, one in the engine bay for the security options and one on each side behind the driving/fog lights. I used the one on the passenger side which requires removal of the wheel and most of the plastic cover inside the arch. I removed the original horn, drilled the bracket out and fitted the new horn to the original bracket,( I tried the drivers side first but the offset is opposite and it didn't clear everything. You could fiddle around with brackets and get it to fit if you wanted to. I should also mention that I've had an Over The Radiator intake fitted and have to admit I didn't take any notice of where the original intake came from so I don't know if it would get in the way). I then used the original horn wires to operate the relay that came with the horn. The horn specifications state current draw as 18amps, the original fuse is 15amp. Fuses are put in line to protect wiring, not the end product, there is no way I would connect the horn to the original wiring connectors or put a higher rated fuse in the original holder and risk damage to a wiring loom, or worse, a fire. So, I put in a new fuse from the jump start post in the engine bay and ran it behind the original air box position and down to the horn, completely covered in split corrugated plastic tube and ran the negative back up to the chassis post near the air box. I left the original horn on the drivers side connected and when I hit the horn button they both operate. If there is a legality problem with the air horn all I have to do is pull the new fuse out and the original horn on the drivers side still works
