Salt is the go it soaks up a lot of the fat to make it easier to remove. Be careful about thinking that once it is hot it will be clean, some bugs that the heat may have killed can still leave behind toxic chemicals (toxic bacteria poo).
I scrub with salt and scrape the worst off just after cooking and if it hasn't been used for a bit take it to the laundry tub and wash it like anything else. Don't leave it in the tub too long (like forgetting about it overnight) as it can stain the tub.
Spraying it with a bit of oil once done to stop the rust.
