hi

how else do you get a car thats over 20 years old with over 300000 km a bit more reliable even though the e series fords are good cars that might need some work when you dont have the $$ to do it all at once and have to do most important first then move down to others after

because theres places some people would like to go but they cant as their cars need work and some can only afford to fix what needs doing soonest first then work through the others and just have to wait until there all fixed

Not sure exactly what you are asking here, but it seems like how long is a piece of string.

What you need to remember is that if you start rebuilding a car you WILL spend more money on it than it is worth. My grandfather passed away last year leaving his EB falcon on gas, it was going to cost too much to get a road worthy on it and get it up to scratch in order to sell it so it was donated to the local CFA so they could practice cutting people out.

The only thing you can do to prolong the life is servicing and identifying things that are starting to go.

20yo car with many k's how to get more reliable - maintain it.

no $$? cry more, cars cost money.

people who can only break fix - tough titties?

If you want your car to last and it's old you pre-emptively fix and service you don't break/fix - why because in the long run it's generally cheaper to do that. Break fix is a zero sum game, but if you want to live in the world of break fix then you have to understand you are going to have breakdowns.

If you bought something that was ancient with many k's on it to start with there is a very good chance that it's half dead to start with.

SS Commodore - Ford Territory ... both camps
With cars and ageing, there's only a handful of things that will stop you dead in your tracks. Fuel pump, alternator, ignition, fanbelt failure. Most of the other things like batteries, water pumps, starter motors, carbs etc will degrade and you'll notice it before it fails completely. Fix the things that will leave you stranded if they fail first, then sort the other stuff over time.

But in saying that if you bought a car new, kept for 7 years and don't like the new model, freshening up some things can be a cost effective solution, especially if you can do some mechanical work yourself and no special tools are required. Things like replacing a worn steering wheel/gear knob with a better one, getting some PDR done to take out door dings, giving it a good polish and touching up small scratches and stone ships, replacing crazed headlights with new ones, replacing or refurbing scuffed wheels.
