    Contrary Advice!

I once had a friend who had a used car yard. I always found out that he was spot on with his advice, be it regarding specific models or times to buy or not to buy.

One thing he told me was that once a car has passed ten years old, odometer readings became much less important. The main issue became more how it had been used and looked after than how many kilometres it had travelled. His recommended test was how it handled an extended test drive, covering NVH as well as engine performance.

There is every likelihood that a 12 year old VS with 120K on it has spent its life doing short trips, which is not good for the condition of the engine in particular.

My VS 5 speed that I bought new in early 1997 is still in the family, and still going strong at 225K. I see no reason why a VS well looked after should not continue to give faithful service up to around 300K at least.

I've got a burnout car at my work with 8650k's on it, time for a head gasket, thats ALL burnout kays and the odd drive to a show or a cruise around. I also had a Celica with 422000, still running A1.

How the car has been driven and maintained is the main thing, of course time will take it toll on other compenents.

Picked my car up with 165,000kms on it, now has 185,000kms on it.

Holden book shows it was a fleet car for Dasfleet scince it was bought new. Then got sold while over here and then ive become the 3rd owner.

Nothing engine wise has needed replacing, besides a leaky valley cover gasket, a dead water pump and the crank angle sensor. Not bad for a 16 year old car.

Ive got the full service history for it too, and mainly its been just services and air con repairs, and the power steering pump once recently a year or two before i bought it.

i bought both my cars from my dad,

stato 1995 vs - he owned for 3 years (had it rego'd for 6months) and ive had it for 2 1/2 years and its about the 215ish kms mark, only thing major was the gearbox..which was my fault anyway.

Senator 1994 vr - he owned for 5-6 years and it sat in a shed the whole time and rarely got driven (he never rego'd it) and ive had it for 5 months, its got around 135ish kms...(he got it with 128xxxish kms) only issue was the auto, again was my fault.

But over all, i'd say around 200 for a vs and 250ish for vrs are pretty good considering alot of them are daily drivers and things will always break no matter how many kms they have. my brother skids his car, hoons the **** out of it and never serviced it( vr exc) and hasnt missed a beat. me on the other hand give my cars a hiding every now and again and im the only one who has issuse lol. owell

    VS commodore with 352,000

Hi there i have 352,000 kms all i have had toi do is the coil packs, front bushes, shocks, thrust bearing and rear seal on the motor, everything else is great, just remember commodores will last a lot longer if you keep the regular oil changes up to it this includes the motor and the gearbox and diff i had to change my diff oil 4 times in 5000 km because the previous owner never changed it and everytime i looked in it, it was black and gritty. so keep this in mind.

    cheers

    Best to be under 200,000.
They are a solid motor and just keep going, if you give it bit of love they can go well into the 400,000.
our VR here has 194,000 on it. And after a few hundred bucks on new plugs, leads, fuel filter, oil, oil filter, trans service, power steering flush, and IAC Clean and reset, it runs so smooth, and the fuel eco, OMG i dont even get this from the VX, the missis got 699 kms on a tank and no fuel light yet lol, and this is on bendy road not just a freeway.

mine has 165,000 goes fine. my mate got a stato. got 212, goes better. and my other mate got a car exact same as mine, got 320,000 and honest to god goes just as well as mine except the reverse takes a while to kick in. drive is fine. and it guns just as good as mine with half the kms. i might like to also add that his one with 320,000 has a broken odometer. so who knows what its done. btw he never thrashes it and its acctually owned by his grandmother whos had it from new

just bought a VS wagon with 195xxxk,s runs and drives very well
removed the rocker covers to change the gaskets and you could eat your dinner off of the rocker gear
in reality i think i would rather own a high k car that has been looked after with many country road k,s on it than a car that has 140xxxk and spent all of its like idling around the metro area !
mine is a country pack car (LSD sump guard etc ).....drove it 400k today feels like a new car to drive
ohh it is also HSV enhanced ....has a sunroof fitted to it
    repairs needed
    water pump
    hoodliniing
    rocker cover gaskets
    strip windows and re tint
was an ex dept of admin services car then 1 owner from then till i bought it ..service records came with the car and everything else pertaining to all the fitted extras

My vs ute had done 262km when I bought it at the end of may, it'd done a lot of country driving, now its up to 271kms and I've only had to replace the leads and spark plugs, no other problems with it =D
Also got one mate whose vs commy has almost 260kms on it, he's had a few problems on it like water pump etc when he bought it, now he's having trouble with the alternator every other week. On the other hand another mate's got a vr with more than 350kms on it, and he's hardly had any problems with it since he bought it with 180kms.
The way I see it is doesn't really depend on how many kms it's done, but whether it's been looked after not thrashed or worn out.
