For no reason in particular I have been looking at depreciation of new commodores. Is it just me or is it absolutely ridiculous? The numbers below are all off the internet and I’d like to know if you think they’re accurate. They are all 2004 sedans with 20,000 – 40,000kms. The only difference is the state they are being sold in. '04 VZ Executive Sedan New - $35,410 1 Yr Old - $23,990 Loss - $11,420 '04 VZ Acclaim New - $39,050 1 Yr Old - $26,990 Loss - $12,060 '04 VZ Berlina V6 New - $42,990 1 Yr Old - $31,990 Loss - $11,000 '04 VZ Calais V6 New - $52,660 1 Yr Old - $37,750 Loss - $14,910 '04 VZ SV6 New - $38,990 1 Yr Old - $29,998 Loss - $8,992 '04 VZ SS New - $50,990 1 Yr Old - $39,990 Loss - $11,000 And that’s just in one year!! That’s like $30 per day. Are my numbers accurate or have I missed something?
Isnt that insane. I would never buy a new car. Figures look accurate too. At least with an older car, say VR/VS and older the price hits a flat, where it wont decrease much over time if its looked after. Still have running costs. I was looking at cars on the weekend and came across Fords with the 290kW boss engine. 2003 model i think selling for just over $20k (you could easily get it down to $20k). Like top range cars selling at that price - whats wrong with them. Once the new VE comes out with its new shape the VY and VZ will just drop like a lead weight in value. Those figures $30 should worry most people. If your paying that plus costs - thats a decent chunk of your pay for the day - everyday. Nice work daveb8. Nice to see real research and results. :air:
i lost my lighter today neva mind ive got a few more. but my marbles are my biggest loss, ill never forgive you jacob mangrypants the 9th. when i find you im gonna take your teeth and buy a cow...
The numbers aren't good however you are quoting RRP. Most people & especially businesses don't pay this. For example my VYII ss was $53,000 RRP with all the addons (leather seats etc) but managed to put it on the road for $44,000. There is still a heap of depreciation but maybe not quite to the extent that you have there. Reaper
thats just how it is with crappadores or fords. Ill trade mine in 2/3 years and get another new car. Ive had enough of cars with problems that i have to fix, just keep it till warranty is gone and then upgrade.
Either do this or always buy 2nd hand, as you wont loose as much money that way as you will brand new.
sounds about right. here you can get a good vt average km's for 7-9k vr-vs 5-7k and vn-vp you can pick up from 1200-5k max depending how good it is. These are caryard prices. makes sense considering how many are out there.
my brother in law was looking around for a VT11 a few weeks ago... I thought piece of piss, he'll pick one up cheap as! he ended up with a 1999 VT 11 with 189,000k's on it for $8,900 (he had a budget of $9,000) it had some good stereo gear & in good cond. logbooks etc.as soon as they have 100,000 k's or thereabouts, they seem to command an extra couple of grand....
brought my Calais for $13,000 approx 3 years ago... now shes lucky to pull $7500. not as bad as some of the newer cars, but calais seem to drop heaps quick... whats the go with VL's? they hold they value like nothing else. it seems that anytime you buy a car over $5,000 you stand to lose a lot in the first year or so. if I ever borrowed over $5000 to buy a car I think I would buy a diesel 4wd next time around. these seem to hold there value better than anything. especially 4wd utes.
I'm I paid $13,750 for a 1 year old VY2 last Sept. Thats what they go for. BA's aren't much better. If you want to see depreciation check Audi or the HSV Grange.
vl's hold value? I wouldn't pay more then a grand while knowing whats around and depending whats in it. 5L might be a bit different.
you're still paying a couple of grand for a nice VL exec.... you can get a nice VN for the same.... maybe we just disagree, but its something I have noticed over the last few years
Sounds Good to me! Let's see. 2004 Executive now worth $23,990. I bought mine for $23,293 brand new, granted after GST refund. Does not sound like much of a depreciation problem to me.
yep, depreciation is a killer, no doubt about it. its all about demand and supply. the next few years are going to be very bad for depreciation, due primarily to the fact that australia had another new car sales record year. the glut of new cars on the road is going to kill prices in the second hand market. on the other hand, good for people not in the new car market!
main thing i hate about the "depreciation" no one seems to look at accessories, or money put into the car... It's all about what base model it is, and as mines a Exec base, yards are saying, nah, wouldn't pay more than $14k... wtf??? It's power optioned, police pack, big wheels, big stereo... these aren't like adding sticks ffs... Mine has drop about 5-8k since august 2005...
I'v seen them car yards that give finance to the unemployed and any poor person selling a 92 model VP in normal good condition for $11000. And i'd say it would be sold to people who dont know crap about cars and have no money and need there finance
