Simple put autos are for shopping trolleys, if you want reliability you go for t56 and Z-grip clutch.
I doubt a stock trans would last long especialy without a trans cooler, regardless its still iffy.
Hence why when you buy a car and intend to do engine work and up the power you always buy a manual and go from there.

I've no information to back this up, But I was either told or read somewhere that the 6AT gearboxes used in the VE's were rated to 650-700nm. Which Would be at the flywheel.
That being the point where internals start deciding enough is enough.
Horse power wont break anything, torque will though.

Could be TOTALLY wrong and have no objection with anyone correcting me.
That said how ever, I think the gearbox will be fine to 500flywheel HP. (Hp and ftlbs are mostly very much related to one another so maybe have alook at a few dyno graphs and see how they corropsond.)

I drive a manual and I don't agree with that comment. For 1/4m auto's are prefered. Generally give much faster times.

The VE was the first commodore to come fitted with a sequential shift auto',but coupled with the five or six-speed(like my one in the photos) its the most fun you can have without a clutch.

i agree. ive been running autos for yrs, one tends to learn all the tricks and mods after a while. as for the 6spd auto they are a good box in general but do have their strong points and weak points and can be built to handle decent hp. the trick with them seems to be finding a decent tuner as they have about 400 diff tuning tables as opposed to the earlier 4l60 having about 10. if a good tune is done they are good. in stock form they can handle up to about 300rwkw after that they need strengthening. running fully synth fluid will make them run cooler as well. ive put them down the strip with no probs...oh and im not a fan of the t56 in stock form either if holden swallowed their pride and copied the ford version (much better shift qaulity) they would be a nice box
