How much would it cost to replace a power steering pump on VS 96 Berlina
I’m pretty sure my power steering fluid is leaking at the pump.

I’m just wondering what I should expect the cost to be if I was to get it fixed via a mechanic, has anyone got any ideas?

Should I use a regular mechanic or steering specialists?

I thought I needed a new pump till I discovered the oil leaking from the pump was actually coming from the reservoir - it was leaking where one of the hoses joined the reservoir and running down the underside of the hose to the pump - this is not visible as it's all out of view.....so I suggest you check this first as it could save a few $$$. did my vs for 50 bucks (wreckers pump) borrowed the power steering fluid or auto trans fluid and took 30 mins approx
thats the way 2 go to save dollas

My car had the PS pump replace before I bought it. Apparently cost $300 ($220 for the pump and $80 for labour - this included degreasing the engine).

With regard to reconditioned pumps, all the mechanics I have ever talked to won't touch them. In their opinion, you'll save money and problems by going for a new pump.

Ive found the leak, i cut the sheath (thin loose rubber) off what looks to be the send from the pump to the steering (bottom most pipe) and found, when someone turns the steering wheel, the flexible bit of the pipe springs a leak under pressure.

A) Is that sheath ultra important as i cut it off to find where it was leaking, and can i buy a new one?

B) How on earth do you replace that pipe, its so cluttered under there i cant even see where it connects to the steering, maybe this is a job for a real mechanic?

C) when i was changing the oil, i dropped the bolt into the oil and didnt realise it had a copper washer, so i ended up putting the nut back in the sump without the washer and found out after i was disposing of the oil, should i undo the sump bolt again and bother putting the washer back on, or can it last until i do another oil change?

Not sure about the PS hoses, but the sump plug washer stops small oil leaks in my experience. I'd be putting the washer back on - but you may loose a few 100 mL of oil, most of it on you ;-)
