how thick should front brake pads be?

Any fibrous material including non asbestos fibro even wood and even dust off the ground is bad for your health.
This is why every dusty work place advises dust masks for safety.

Working in a bad work environment like I do, there has been no recommendation for masks. They have made it compulsary to wear gloves, safety glasses and hearing protection though

What industry is that? Is it dusty?

Tyre industry and yes it is dusty.

Pop the wheels off and you get all the brake dust, which can be "amplified" when a gust of wind blows through the workshop.

I also do road service.....Changing a wheel in the middle of a paddock = plenty of dust, but not brake dust.....Just dirt
