just curious, has this thread helped any body?
I know this thread is old, but this information will prove useful for years to come. I deal with a stolen cars page, and use this exact page all the time. I will also add info here, so would be grateful that when I do, that you can update the post. Cheers. If I don't get a reply (if you are no longer an active member), I'll copy the post and carry on with what you started.

COMMODORE VIN CHECKER by Michael Holliday (VB to ZB)
OK, so the original post was made by "fuzzy2308" who hasn't been on here since 2015, so I don't expect his post to be updated. So here is a modified VIN list for Commodores (VB to ZB etc.)
Multiple info sourced, including from:
http://www.vlturbo.com/vin_decoders/ (has issues with VZ decoding, just take out the V)
https://www.uniquecarsandparts.com.au/holden_identification (EJ to EH/HK to WB)
https://forums.justcommodores.com.au/
Note: Besides the three letters that are not allowed in the VIN itself (I, O and Q), the letters U and Z and the digit 0 are not used for the model year code. The year code is the model year for the vehicle https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_identification_number
Built plate year (and thus rego year) of Sept through to Dec will have the model year after. Eg A car built in Sept/Oct/Nov/Dec in 2017 (and registered as a 2017 built car) will be a 2018 model (ZB Commodore with a year code of J).
I'm no VIN expert nor a Commodore owner, but a deal with stolen cars and use this (and other) VIN checkers every day. Hope it helps you.

Important note.
When you get done by police for not having your car registered you can now be very certain that it is registered.

The above details go into a national register of motor vehicles before its even been rolled out of the factory door. The VIN number is the vehicles registration number. The VIN number remains on the national register even after its been crushed up into a block.

So when police tell you they have run your car through their computer and that its not registered just say something like "what do you mean its not registered? The VIN number goes on to a national register as soon as its made, before its even sold and it must be registered because it came up on your computer to know that its not registered as you claim, didn't it?

The police will then say something like "but you have not paid the registration fee." Reply to this by saying something like, ah, now i know what the problem is, it is registered but I've just not paid money to someone, thanks for reminding me, see you later."

If they then try to turn that stop into some other issue such as they want to search your car then that is unlawful detention which is a tort so you can then sue for damages.

In order to search your car they must have reasonable suspicion that the car has or is about to be used in the commission of a crime, and or, they believe that something that may be stolen is in your vehicle, or that a person they are seeking is in the vehicle.

Your proof that they did not have any grounds for them to have 'reasonable suspicion' is that they pulled you up and dealt with the rego issue first and only then they tried to turn it into something else.

This is the situation in WA so the laws relating to this kind of thing are likely to be different for the other states so you will need to check out any difference.

If you don't know your rights you don't have any rights so go and learn them and enforce them.
go to aussie speeding fines and know your rights group.

You've gone off on a bit of a tangent here. The meaning "registered" does not just apply to one thing on a car, or even solely cars (you may have heard of cash registers?) Having a VIN means that the VIN has been "registered", ie. "entered or recorded on an official list or directory", that list being a list of cars made. This is different to the registration that you pay, which becomes "entered or recorded on an official list or directory", of which the list would be for cars that are allowed to drive on the road, this is known as a "license plate registration", for which I'm sure as you would know from that "Aussie Speeding Fines" place you mentioned. So to make the connection as the VIN registration to be the same as License plate registration makes everything you mention afterward null and void. Using your thinking, it would be the same as you saying that you are allowed to drive a rocking horse on the free-way solely because you have a drivers license which is "registered" with the Motor Vehicle Registry. I'm really not sure about the legitimacy of that page to be quite frank after reading you rationale.

All vehicles in Australia are registered (listed) on a national register or list. In addition to any other info that may be recorded on the list or register, is the Vehicle Identification Number as this unique to the vehicle and stays with that vehicle for the life of the vehicle.

Police use the term 'registration' they don’t refer to "license plate registration," so they invite the suggested response. The issue is about paying money for the right to take our personal conveyance on public owned roads which our taxes have paid for with the 6 or 8, whichever, cent levy we Australians agreed to pay in the 1980's as a result of a referendum on the matter.

This levy pays for the construction and ongoing maintenance of ALL roads, main roads and local roads, so why should we have to pay again through a license plate registration tax and why also should we have pay again via toll gate tax?

This in getting off track a bit I admit but its food for thought.

A "license" makes something legal that would otherwise be illegal. We get a marriage license when we get married so who made marriage illegal and what authority did they have to make it illegal?

When we "register" anything, we are at least in part, surrendering ownership of what we are 'registering' whether it be our car or our kids. Furthermore, we are claiming slave status because we submit to their 'authority' and we thereby submit to their jurisdiction over us, which makes us subordinate to them.

We claim slave status because we do as they tell us don’t we?
