My VS ute (ecotec) needs a new power steering pump because it's leaking and when I went to auto one they asked if I had a variatronic or non variatronic power steering pump I don't know which I have how do I tell them apart by looking at it I can take a picture if needed

Only the upper spec models like Statesmans had variable steering pumps.

The above is correct. There is no visible difference on the outside of the pump, the change is internal. The rack is the best way to be certain, the variatronic steering has an extra electrical solenoid fitted to the rack.
