hi all, I bought a set of diff gears recently and was wondering if it would be a good idea to drop them into a bucket of diff oil, just to stop them from rusting? (they'll be sitting on my shelf for a while till I get the other parts for my new diff togetherlol) Or is this not neccessary? cheers
No need just don't get them wet I have a set in my shed that have been out of oil for over a year and nothing wrong with them there just sitting in a place they can't get wet.
Won't be necessary. But if you want, dab some oil on some cloth, rub down the gears, and wrap in cring-wrap.
As above^^^^ or you could try some LPS 3 corrosion inhibitor. It's used in the aircraft industry. Excellent stuff and not expensive.
I'd coat and cover. IF they are new then they have probably come wrapped and sealed so you may as well leave em as is. Store in a dry/warm moisture free area.
cheers guys, bit of split opinions lol does it have to be diff oil or can I just rub normal engine oil on them? cheers
I'd use diff oil or a proper anti-corrosion treatment, engine oil is a little thinner. As long as it's coated and then covered it should be all good. Diff gears are made from quality steel and will take some effort before corrosion sets in.
As immortality says ^^^^ IMO, if you can get some LPS3 use it. It contains bee's wax and it leaves a thick coating to prevent corrosion. I tried it on a piece of bear metal and left it outside for over a year ( I forgot about it) and there was no sign of corrosion. It's used in the aircraft industry and we went though alot of it when I was at QANTAS. You wont find it in the shops but you can get it on line. It comes in spay cans, 2 or 3 litre containers and even in 200 litre drums.
Cheers guys, i dont have any diff oil here at them moment, just some engine oil... would it actually be "bad" for them to rub engine oil on them just for now?
Why not just leave them in the original box? They have been stored in that since packaging and haven't corroded. Unless they aren't new.
Soo....... What did we end up doing with the gears and how did they go..? I am in the same situation, just got myself a set of second hand gens, fresh out of someone's diff. haha Will unfortunately be a while till I have the extra $ to get them fitted so want to be able to store them for some time Sorry for the thread dig.
Put them in a large zip lock back with some diff oil then put them in a box, then put them in a cupboard, then forget where you put them so you have to buy some more....
