How to tell if top or bottom end as gone

I have a VT 2000 that is making a knocking/ticking sound. I have been told it is the bottom end but there is no loss of power.
Before the knocking started I had loss of power every now and then when putting my foot down and I would hear air coming from underneath the passenger side dashboard but that has stopped since I had the whole cooling system redone.

I need help to try and figure this out!!!
