Hey there forum goers! My name's Kile and I'm here to ask for some help. I've been reading these forums on and off over the last couple of months as I started taking interest in Holdens and Holden Commodores. Just the other day, I purchased a pristine 1993 VR 6 Seater from a close friend of mine. 10,000K's on all the running gear, new transmission, diff everything. Replacing the motor with a stock 3.8 from a spare VR that has 60,000K's on it tomorrow. The only thing bung with it is the clearcoat's coming off. Whilst I'm doing the swap with a few mates tomorrow, going to do some paint touchups as well as a clearcoat re-do as well. NOW, to my questions! Now, I'm sure you've heard this line before: I want to make performance modifications to my VR, but I'm on my P's. There's VERY mixed information regarding a lot of the stuff I'm about to list, so I'd like it if someone that really knew what they're talking about could give me information. First is first: I am planning on getting a 2 and a 1/2 inch Lukey Cat back (with a resonator). I've seen them suggested around this forum and I've heard them before too, they sound absolutely phenomenal. Exactly the sound that I'm after. Is running this Cat Back going to make the car not P plater legal? I am in the understanding that Intake/Engine modifications are allowed, but an exhaust system is neither. Second: I'm also planning on grabbing myself a highflow cat as well. Pretty much the same question as above. Third: I've heard a LOT about ECU Memcal chips, and have witnessed them in action. I plan on grabbing a Stage 4 Memcal chip from TRX100, which is said to yield around 13-17kw gains. Is this a good idea? I know you guys are recommending greenfoam, but from what I understand he's quite expensive and hard to contact. If I can most definitely get more power from his, and get in contact, I will go with his tunes instead. How will this affect fuel economy? Fourth: A family friend of mine mentioned something to me, and I don't know what it's name is. What it is, is a modified o2 sensor, that reads 2*C cooler than what it actually is. The theory behind this, is that the unit makes the car think it's a bit colder than it actually is, and therefore makes it run a bit richer. There have been reports of anything from 20 to 35kw gains from this alone. I've been in an AU ute before and after this unit was installed, and it was DEFINITELY noticeable. Do you guys know what the name of this is? Is it a bad idea? Fifth: Cold air intakes. What are these, how do they work, what are the benefits, are they P-plate legal? I'm well aware of the intake on the VR, but it looks pretty fluff-arse tiny. Is modifying this an option? If so, how? Last but not least. With the Lukey Catback, Hi-Flow Cat, ECU+o2 (and perhaps CIA), what would the expected performance increase be? I'm HOPING for at least a noticeable difference, . Are there other things that I can do that aren't all that expensive to help increase performance of my car? Cheers everyone. Sorry for the long post
Pretty much all mods affecting performance are illegal as far as in aware. The lukey cat-back will be nice, not too loud but gives it a note. The high flow cat will likely bring on your engine light unless you get a custom tune (not worth it unless you're going to boost it). The 2* cooler mod would be an online resistor to the intake air temp sensor NOT o2 sensors. Never used one, maybe someone else can elaborate...? Cold air intake will be more noise than anything else, but you'll probably notice a little gain in engine response. Either do one of the many "do it yourself" airbox mods, or buy a mace engineering one. Plenty of things you can do if you want to spend money, like a tune, higher ratio rockers, bigger throttle body, extractors, etc. but it'll never be a rocket. Likely to put a smile on your face if you have a few grand to waste...
The exhaust should be good as long as its not to loud as for re-tune with hiflo cat Ive never heard that before. extractors and hiflow cat with that cat back should free up a few ponies as for legal if its not loud you should get away with it if its not p plate legal.Forget number 4 totally, contacting greenfoam can be difficult but he is not expensive and i have used 2 memcals done by him both with minor gains on stock motor.. Mace or even factory type cold air intake with good filter (like a k&N) wont give noticeable gains in itself but with everything else as a package and along with proper servicing its about as much as you can do with out getting into definite p plate restrictions.
I would you suguest you peruse the RTA P1/P2 Licence restriction page. It can be found here. Specifically, this section: Prohibited vehicles The prohibited vehicle condition restricts provisional (P1 and P2) drivers from driving certain high performance vehicles. The condition applies to provisional licences issued on or after 11 July 2005. The scheme aims to prohibit young driver access to vehicles that are overrepresented in young driver crashes. Prohibited vehicles are those with: •Eight or more cylinders. •A turbocharged engine (except diesel). •A supercharged engine (except diesel). •Engine performance modifications that require an engineers' certificate. •Certain high performance six cylinder engine vehicles or other vehicles as described in the publication Novice Drivers - High Performance Vehicle Restrictions. As far as I am aware, exhausts, cold air intakes, high flow cats, computer re-flashes etc are not mods that require an engineer's certificate. In fact I think the list of mods that need an engineer's certificate is basically limited to turbo and superchargers which are prohibited in any case. In any case, I've been driving for two years on my P's and have been in my Commodore for a year and a half. In this time, I've been pulled over for a few breath tests and all could be described as "routine" with one exception when an officer was "suspicious about why I was on the road at 4:00 am", which to be fair probably was valid given the time and place. In no instance did any officer inspect the vehicle in any great detail beyond briefly checking the tyres, which were all roadworthy and possibly making sure the lights that were on were working. I don't have a modified exhaust, nor do I have any outward signs that the car has had it's performance modified. I've kept the stock alloys on, haven't lowered the car. I don't "hoon around", developing a reputation for doing the wrong thing. In short, I don't give the police any reason to suspect that there is anything untoward under the bonnet. I would hazard a guess my driving experience would change if the car had a loud exhaust, was lowered to within an inch of the ground, with big 20's on, while I was constantly powersliding my way around every corner like I thought it was a drifting contest. Bottom line is police have better things to do than comb over some kid's car to see if it might be modified, if they have no reason to believe it is. If however you give them a reason, that changes everything.
I must say, your post was written in a very easy to read manner, as well as the added bit of humor made it an interesting read, thank you very much . I've had a chat with the guy that's doing the Memcal for me, and he's suggested that it may be a bad idea to do the O2 Diode modification with his tune, as they may conflict. I'm also not after massive fuel usage for little gain, so I think it's something I may pass on. He also stated that often engines run BETTER when they're running lean, which I have also experienced with motorbikes. I assure you, I'm not really a hoon. I do enjoy a good note from my cars, as well as a nice pickup in speed when I put my foot down on the odd occasion, but I certainly do understand what you're talking about. Whilst I won't be putting 20" rims and lowering it within an inch of the ground, I believe I'll still install the cat back, as I'm very keen on my car sounding "good". My list has changed to: 2.5" Lukey Cat Back High Flow Cat (100CPI). ECU Tune by TRX100 CIA, off of a larger VT, so it's not considered an aftermarket accessory. I've checked into this, and you can get away with it. PERHAPS a 70mm throttlebody, I'm not entirely sure as of yet. It's expensive, but I've heard the benefits are good. Later on, I WILL chuck King-spring lows on it, but I plan on keeping my gloss-black stockies with trim rings (unless you guys think that'll draw attention). That's along with my competition-grade audio gear, but I'm not the type to "DOOF DOOF DOOF" in town anyway. Cheers for your feedback everyone
Only thing I can see on that list that would give you any trouble is if the exhaust is too loud, otherwise all sounds pretty good. In NSW we have it pretty good in some ways, as unlike some states where no mods are allowed at all on P's, we have fairly free reign to do as we please short of forced induction. What do you mean by "gloss black stockies with trim rims", could you post a photo? I personally prefer the look of alloys over stockies or hubcaps, but seeing as mine came with alloys from new I just left them on. Tyres for 15 inch wheels are cheaper than 17 and larger, but you could probably pick up a set of 17's cheaply if you wanted to. 15" alloys are basically worthless, so if you're like me and just want some form of alloy wheel, then they might be worthwhile to look at. I picked up a set of 4 VN SS alloys for under $50 at an auction a few months ago, to give you an idea of what's out there if you're interested.
