Just after a bit off feedback from people's experiences with diff gearing when running the T5 behind the v6. My VS was recently converted to 5 speed, so i still have the existing 3.9 gears under the back that i had with the auto. The auto loved the 3.9's and it it was VERY quick, but with the manual the gearing feels way too short. So short, in fact, that im just about to slot into 3rd as ive crossed through to the other end of a main intersection. Also i can cruise at 60km/h in 5th, no worries, and pick up speed 5th without dropping back!

Clearly the gearing is too short and the continuous gear changing is irritating me. So my question is.. Shall i drop back to 3.7 or 3.45? 3.45s i can get easily from my local u- pull- it wrecker for $60, but 3.7s are a bit harder.

My intended application is for the car to be fairly quick off the mark (like the auto was) but not require so many gear changes, and also be able to cruise at 100 with reasonable revs.

    ADVICE PLEASE!!

i've got the 3.45's in mine(VN T5) and it goes ok of the line, on the 1/4mile however i'm revving to low in 4th as i cross the line, 3.7's would be better there. but i'm making a lot less mumbo so 3.45 would go a lot better in your ride then mine. the ecotec also makes it's power higher up the rev range so maybe you could hold 3rd with 3.45's across the line etc

If you worried bout gear changing why did you shuck the 5 sp in???
Why not just go bang in the 3.45's for $60, and see how they go. Are you putting the gears in yourself?
If so then whats $60, thats nothing, worst case is you dont like em and then sell them and get the 3.7s and see how they go.

If you put two and two together, im trying to imply that i am goin thru too many gear changes TO GET UP TO SPEED. First gear is MEGA short. Im thinking that my diff ratio is too short. Im NOT saying that changing gears in the manual (in general) is annoying me!! To me its not as easy as banging in the different ratios and selling them if i dont like them, that costs $$$ and time and im a uni student.

I would like to hear from people who ACTUALLY HAVE feedback from their own experiences BEFORE i do the change myself!

    Thanks

do you use the same pinion gear in a 3.08 as you do in a 3.45?

With the V6 T5 ratio set 3.45s are the ideal ratio (3.08 is not too bad either), once you go more than 3.45 it's too much

    nah different crown wheel/ pinion

with the 5speed, you're only changing gears more because you have more gears to go through. you're only travelling about 1km/h faster with the manual than the auto, so it shouldn't be a problem

Man calm down i wasnt taking a stab at you, and i wasnt sure if u were putting the gears in urself or not, if you were it would be cheap, if you were gettin some one else to do the gears it will be quite costly, thats why i was asking.
And I have drivin a 5ltr 5 sp with 3:7's in it and i found the gears to be a good distance apart, and i wasnt changing up and down too much to get to speed. Only thing that was the worst about it was how bad the speedo was out lol.
