I saw a brand new one on ebay thats why i was asking, Its a bit rich but as you said, hard to get a good one.
I had never bothered with swapping the temp guage and never noticed the difference if there is one, I have done the tacho mod before but must have switched to a v6 tacho because thats what was in my old cluster.

I had a similar experience with the pcb for the screens coming away causing digits to fail.

pictures for those still interested in tachos V6 has the R2 R5 populated V8 has the resistor moved from R5 to R3 and additional resistor populates R4.
Interestingly though the V8 tacho is from a vq and has no colour over the serial number

I saw that trip computer, I've got maybe 3 trip computers left made up out of bits from 5+ clusters- if I was desperate and there was nothing else around I'd buy it- a VQ without a trip computer is a big step backwards.
Holden's applied the green and blue paint to the tips of the mounting bolts- probably more of an assembly aid than a help with maintenance 30 odd years later. I reapply it with a coloured texta when I pull a cluster apart-while I still know where the instruments are from.

The VR PCB on the back of the cluster is different - even if you change the wires to suit the VN wiring pin out the regulator feed power different. TheVR cluster only has 9 pins into the regulator - the VN has 10 and the low fuel and speed alert is opposite.

The VR gauges will work in a VN cluster. If you fit a VN PCB & regulator your problem will be fixed - thats my guess.
How about you sir are you still playing with these things?

Its interesting how time just destroys all recollection, I dont even remember half the cluster mods I used to carry out but its all starting to come back.. Thanks for the reminder, I might re mark all the loose bits I have while its still fresh
