I have what has been sold as a 3:08 LSD disc brake rear end out of what is believed to be a VK V8 SS Commodore. My question is this....is there an easy way to determine what diff I actually have? There are a few different numbers cast into the housing...but I have no idea which are relevant...and the local Holden dealer was of no help at all...

What do you actually need to know? What sort of diff it actually is? Or how to find out what ratio it and whether or not it's an LSD?

If it's out of a VK V8 SS, it'll be what's known as a "big" Salisbury (assuming it's the original diff), a photo of the diff backing plate will confirm this. However, if it is the big Salisbury the backing plate will be sort of egg shaped and have 10 bolts holding it on to the diff.

If it's an LSD, if you turn 1 wheel the other wheel will spin the same direction. If you spin a wheel and the other wheel spins the opposite direction, it's a single wheeler (non LSD).

If it is a Salisbury, the ratio will be stamped on the round collar right behind the pinion flange (assuming the gear set is original).

If you can find the cast date I can put it in the rough vintage to verify that.

Is it a Borg Warner or a Holden Salisbury?

Thanks for all the help. It is a Borg Warner diff and it is a LSD. Here are a few pics that may help.....

Well, it's not out of a VK then (unless it had a Borg Warner fitted at some point) because the Borg Warner didn't come out until VL. VK's had either the small or large Salisbury, depending on the vehicle and/or engine.

I think the EFI and the brock had the B/W...

Apparently i havn't cared to look at enough VK Commodores:p However, my dad owns a genuine Group 3 Brock and it has the big Salisbury, so i don't think all Brocks had a Borgy.
