Hey guys,

What are your thoughts on this ? Its nearing time to replace ignition components in the old 5L and I am looking to replace things with better then stock items. And hopefully get a bit more fuel economy out of the old slug.

Better than stock?
You won't find much better than the Holden OEM gear, it is top shelf stuff.

FYI pro comp = poo comp, google or search the forum for pro comp.

I'd keep what you have, no need to upgrade the ignition system unless you are running stupidly high compression or FI.

If you are looking at preventive maintenance, I'd be:

. Replacing the coil (because they can fail without warning and are a bastard to replace due to lack of clearance) - Bosch units are available,
. Purchasing a second hand or reconditioned ignition module and leaving it in the car - usually give some warning of failure and are easy to replace,
. Considing replacing the distributor. The Hall Effect sensor has been known to fail but is usually quite reliable. Distributor replacement is also a trial due to lack of clearance and the potential for getting things wrong.

As other posts have indicated, there is nothing wrong with the OEM ignition components other than possibly that their location subjects them to excessive heat. Having said that, the under bonnet heat generated by a Commodore V8 is nowhere near the heat generated by an LS1 V8.
