Hardly the subject that should be discussed in the pub by a majority male crowd... but here goes.

As the title suggests, I need a new vacuum because the one I have is my mums 25 year old Electolux POS. It has the sucking abilities of a 90 year old with emphysema.

Basiclly, I need something that is bagless and something that is good for pet hair as my better half moults more then her parents malamute in summer time. I have been looking at Dyson vacs, but I know they cost an arm and a leg. Are they actually worth it? Are there any other brands on a similar level?

My budget is around 500 - 700 bucks.

    Cheers :)

Ironically, I saw on the late night shopping last night a pretty cool new vacuum cleaner... It uses water to trap the dust so there's no dust in the exhaust at all and no bag etc. Even sucks up liquids no problems. For $300 you get the vacuum cleaner, one of those steam cleaners (thrown in) and some other ****. cant remember was 2am and I was half asleep...

got a $70 one that kills pet hair and generally does a fantastic job (even ate plaster dust). Has a bag but you unzip, empty and replace. No ongoing bag costs. Anything more than that is probably overkill unless you feel the need to have an expensive vac.

I reckon everyone about our age has inherited one of those big old electrolux machines. They were awesome new and quite expensive which i think is why old folk feel they must pass them on to us!

Go the Dyson. I thought they were over priced untill we borrowed a friends one.
Haven't looked back since. I vacuumed with our old vac then used the dyson and it filled up twice. No bull.

We picked ours up for $799 with a $80 pet head chucked in free.
Borrow one if u can. U wont believe it till u use it.

I guess desethead has a good point, my cheapy looks like it does a great job, but i have no doubt for $600 more it would pick up more **** form deep in the carpet, dickroaches etc.

I reckon Dyson is over rated personly. to me its a brand name and looks like it should be in a sci-fi movie...

Bit hard now cus your house it already built but a vacum maid (the one in the wall, not the one in the short black dress) is the way to go, the main unit stored in the garage and only a hose to cart around. Will never own another wheeled vac ever again.

If they try to talk you into a "POWER HEAD" tell em to get ****ed

Have a look at the dysons with the rotor thing in the head, helps heaps to pick up hair out of the carpet.
I only have little pis s fart dyson hand held one you use as a dust buster thing, and it is insane!, and is great for car seats.
