Buy a car. Work has gone off its head with old chevy, mustang, corvette etc imports. A lot of car parts coming through, and even things like pots, lawn mowers, bbq's, outdoor settings, boat parts, horse feeders Actually, scrap that. Buy a microlight aircraft
Yeah I just ordered some gauges that came in just under $1000 so no GST or inport duty for me! Also Fekason not sure where you got that info from but I used Fedex on my stuff which was US$960 and it arrived in 4 days (which inclueded the weekend here) and paid no GST or duty.
yeah i dont know what duties everyone is going about, i have spent approx 4-5 grand on parts for the impala through various american websites and ebay over the last 18 months and there has been no additional costs whatsoever. we even bought a 2007 mustang, which although we have to pay customs clearance and GST, there is no duties on it. and yeah, its worth quite a bit more than $1k the only sting you will get on postage is when a company (like summit racing) charges 'postage and handling' rather than just postage. the 'handling' word can cost you tonnes if you dont watch it. some companies think they have the right to whack on huge costs, just cos its going overseas.
As I recall, don't you get imports tax if a single item is over $1000? for example if you buy 2 items @ $600ea (total $1200) you wouldn't get taxed.
so ari, does this mean summit are known for charging ridiculous amounts for handling or did u just use them as an example? i only ask cos im thinking of getting some stuff, nothing too heavy just lightweight stuff like gauges, 4bbl throttle body etc
yeah summit charge "postage and handling" put all the stuff you want into 'shopping cart' check out as far as the postage costs bit, check the price then jump on USPS or DHL's websites and enter postage based on weight and location and compare. a 1000USD set of iron eagle heads was 600USD for frieght, but if you punched the numbers into USPS - The United States Postal Service (U.S. Postal Service) it came up as something like 300USD for postage. (not exact prices, was 18 months ago when i last checked and a lot of beer inbetween) i could be totally wrong, also they may have changed sinced then, but all i am saying is be careful to check postage costs. how good is summit racing's website though?? almost gives you wood.
My input was based on personal experience. The items in question were some memory sticks coming from Crucial Memory in Boise, Idaho. Previously I had bought from them and they had shipped through DHL - had no problems. DHL used available space on commercial aircraft tracking direct LAX to SYD. When they sent a shipment through Fedex, it went on a Fedex aircraft on a 'holiday tour" around the Pacific rim - Canada, Alaska, Japan, South Korea, etc, etc. I followed the shipment on tracking, and after arrival in Sydney I waited about a week and nothing happened. I then rang Fedex to ask what was going on. Their response was that there were duties and taxes due, and they would do nothing until I provided proof to them that I had paid the ATO. I was annoyed that they had not even bothered to inform me of this impasse. It then took another few days to sort out and get delivery. I may have had bad luck, but their is no way that I will use Fedex again; not because of the GOAS charges but because they at no time tried to inform or help me through the situation.
That's not their job. That job belongs to Customs in Sydney. You should have received a letter in the mail informing you of the fees when they were held, but you never know whether or not they send it to the right address, or send it at all.
Ok guys need some help (Ive never purchased from America before) Im buying about 8 shirts from an online store, which Im paying $15 a shirt. So If Im buying items with a total of $120 + $14.50 shipping from what Ive read on some of your posts, I wont be paying any tax or duties? because its under $1000. Is this correct?
Yes this is correct. Also for people wanting car parts I suggest JEGS Performance Auto Parts - Holley - Billet Specialties - Edelbrock - MSD - Moroso - Mr Gasket Same prices as Summit but faster postage, cheaper postage and they don't advertise items that are special order and take 5 weeks to get in, grrrrr.
say i was to buy a 2300 magna charger for a g8 for about 6 grand. because it is A heap of parts would i pay big import tax. if so how much would i be paying. These kits are about 10 grand over here
i never paid any import tax on my laptop that i got a couple years back cost me 1650 inc. postage just came straight to my door
I'm looking at getting a Harley softail imported from the states pretty soon. A good one here goes for about 25 grand, over there you can pick a good one up for 15 I've been told. I will be looking into that next year. I would hate to see the import tax on that though, worth looking into still.
